I want to build the greenhouse featured but want to know about heating it in the winter time. What source of heat do you need? Is the water barrel enough. I live in Ohio.

Hi Cathy-

The green house stays pretty warm if you have it in a good location. Due to an unfortunate accident, my greenhouse didn't stay up all winter, but I know a gal that had hers up all winter with just water filled jugs as passive solar heating. She was harvesting garden green in February! That was in Idaho. I would think that you could paint some water barrels black and really get some good heat stored each sunny day. If it was really cold out you could even toss an old quilt or blanket over the greenhouse at night to be removed during the day. I would do that and my husband would find it amusing- but I would do just about anything for fresh food in the winter!

Thanks Alee. I will let you know when we get it built how things go. I have always wanted a greenhouse especially to start flowers for the spring.I am new to the maryjane farm site.and I wish I had more time to look at everything. There is so much to take in.[All your dreams can come true-if you have the courage to pursue them. Cathy- Oh the green house will for-sure help you start plants and flowers much earlier and keep them going much longer. I bet if you do lose any growing time at all- it would only be about 2-3 months! Which I know is great since around these northern states it seems like the growing season is shut down for at least 5!
