I am still reeling from seeing this group for the 1st time. It was a very special occasion, as it marked the 25th anniversary of Riverbend, an outdoor venue on the Ohio River that is the summer home of the Cincinnati Symphony & the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
It was also especially poignant, as the Pops conductor, Erich Kunzel, was diagnosed in May with pancreatic & liver cancer. He is a world renowned conductor, a frequent guest to the Boston Pops, & LOVED in the Cincinnati area. Couple that with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir & it was magic.
Kunzel looked great ,showed no signs of being ill & was elegant as always.
Hubby & I thought there would be low attendance, but we were happily mistaken. I do not know if it sold out or not, but we could not see one vacant seat. That does my heart good that the fine arts are still alive and well in our community, which was affirmed by Mack Wilberg, director of the choir, who said they were back again after performing in 2007, and said that is extremely rare to come back for a repeat concert so soon.
Also, Neil Armstrong read the narrative of Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait.
It was a well needed joyful night out, & after it was over, I was thinking, the only thing that would have made it even better was if the choir sang "Battle Hymn".. well along came the encore & I got my wish.
Aunt Jenny?? Do you get to regularly see this choir?? Lucky you for being so close. Jim & I would love to see them in the Tabernacle.

What a great night, Lisa! I always love the summer Pops shows at Riverbend. What a nice date night for you and your man!!!
Erich is looking healthy, for sure. And, I'm so happy that the arts are still alive in well in Cincy--they really are. Even for a VERY mediocre performance at the ballet a few months ago (Tharp's Sinatra ), there were only a few empty seats...at about $70.00 per seat, that's a pretty good indicator that folks will pay for the arts.

Yeah...that was the problem. The male dancer was a homegrown pick from Alexandria and was about 8 foot tall and much too gangly, and he looked like he smelled something terrible through the whole piece. And unfortunately, we sat next to the mother of the gal (who was performing in the piece's) and she overheard me stating that it was really not the best representation and introduced herself and said, "I know you're a dancer, I overheard you talking about the pieces..I know you're not a fan of the interpretation, but what did you think of my daughter?" It was actually HER that I didn't care for, but I said, "oh, fab!"...

Wow Lisa. That does sound like a wonderful night. We have a Riverbend here in Chattanooga. It's a week long event with lots of music. I would have gone just to see Willie Nelson, but it's too hot and crowded for me. Yours sounds like just a one night thing?
We also have a Pops In The Park for July 4th. The symphony plays. It used to be in the Chickmauga Park but is now in Chatt. at the park by the river and it's too hard to get to. We did go a few years ago and it was great but again so many people there. But I did enjoy that one. Everyone brings chairs and picnic stuff and sits around and talks to eveyone else. They play games and kids play together. Really fun but funner in the Chick. Park.

Arnt' they awesome???? I have only seen them 2 times in person..once in the tabernacle..wow!! I live almost 3 hours south of SLC. They are sure worth the trip.

Oh Aunt Jenny, we really would love to come & see them on their home turf. Hubby talks about it all the time(this is from a guy that used to listen to hard rock; now he listens to march music & the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! )
If we make it out there, we would definitely have to make a side trip to see your famous little farmette, you, all your kiddos, but most of all...the fabulous Mona!
Kristin, it sounds like you guys have a similar venue. Ours has several conerts, some classical, but the day after our concert, Brad Paisley was coming. There is a pavilion & also a lawn area, which can get quite yucky after rain & whatever else happens on a lawn during a rock concert! |

I grew up in the Salt Lake Valley and was able to see them many times. One of my most memorable times of late was at the one year anniversary after the winter Olympics in 2003. We were cold but they still sounded great during the presentation up outside of the University of Utah Eccles Stadium.
One small note: our family doctor sang in the choir when we were little (60's and early 70's) and when the choir was on in the mornings all us kids would try to pick him out in the telecast. It was fun back then.
