I thought you might know what kind of hen I have that is laying the prettiest dark brown egg I have ever seen. It's almost red. She kind of looks a little like a Golden Laced Wyandotte but without all the lace. She's big and more reddish-brownish. I just have no idea what she is and was thinking you might know. I can't put pictures on here or I would. She also has a regular comb like a Barred Rock.
If anyone else knows, please tell me.

Where did you get her Kris?
She COULD be a Welsummer or a Barnvelder. I know they lay dark colored eggs. I've had the Welsummers before and they resemble a Rhode Island red, but are bigger birds-- if I remember correctly. I've never had the Barnvelders, they always sell out too fast so I can't say what they look like.
You might try looking on "Feathersite" for pictures of those two breeds and see if there is any resemblence to your hen. She could also be a mixed breed that has one of those birds in her background. Let us know what you find out!!! ~~~ Tracy

Thanks Tracy. I think she's one of the auction birds I got several months ago. She's really pretty and big. I will look and see if I can find a picture of her. Some of her toes are twisted too, like the rooster's.

Tracy, she is a Welsummer! She looks exactly like the ones in the pictures. And so is the rooster, Mr. Woo. Thanks so much for your help. Now I know whay all my chickens are now.

Glad I can help Kris.
I had a very SCARY chicken obsession for several years, was even a member of the "Society for Poultry Preservation" (or something like that), and was determined to have every breed of chicken known to man! Let me tell ya, I got VERY close!
I still get a "New" (OLD) breed every now and then and I've really figured out what birds I like, which birds I don't, and WHY some birds are nearly EXTINCT!!!! (NAAAAAASTY creatures some of those breeds!) I also have my favorites, and the Welsummers are on that list-- they're just VERY hard to get or I would definitely have more. Well now I have to find some more, too. She is a very pretty hen and if the roo is a Welsummer, too, maybe I could save some eggs and slip them under a setting hen one day. I just hope she keeps on laying. With this heat they have slowed down a little. And I just put all the 4 dozen eggs in the fridge. I'm afraid they will stio any day and I won't have any eggs.

I know what you mean Kris. My hens have slowed down considerably too. I was giving the excess eggs away. Some of those same people are still expecting me to give them eggs, even after I tell them "Nope, sorry, no eggs right now." They get a little miffed at me, but I feed the darn birds and clean up after them, so I'm keeping what they give right now for my OWN famliy! Call me stingy, but hey--- NO WAY am I BUYING eggs!
I think the best time to order Welsummers from the hatcheries that offer them for sale is in the fall, BEFORE next years production. That way you would be one of the first in line for next seasons orders. I never make it on the lists becuase I don't think about ordering chicks, or seeds, or ANYTHING ELSE seasonal until it's THAT season! Silly me I guess..... Tracy, I've had people tell me "you get your eggs for free", so how can you charge $2.50 a dozen for free range, organic raised, LOL. They don't stop to think, you care for and feed to some degree your hens.

And that feed ain't cheap, either. I go through way too much. With all the baby chicks I have bought at least 300 lbs. of chick starter so far.

I hear ya Kris! Out of ALLLLLL of my critters, I think the chicken feed costs the most. I affectionately call them "My PIGS with FEATHERS!" LOL!!!!
Oh, and at OUR local farmers market the "Organic, Free range" eggs are $4.00 a dozen!!!

YIKES!!! Hey, if someone can sell eggs for $6.00 a dozen -- YOU GO GIRL! (or BOY, if that's the case) Good thing I HATE eggs! HA! HA! HA!
-- but I DO cook with them! And chicken feed here (at least at OUR local feed store) is only about $8.50 a bag. I can live with that. ~~~ Tracy
