I just called my mom and I knew something wasn't right when I heard her and I had to wrangle what it was out of her - Well, she told me she thinks she broke her ribs and she fell in her closet. She's there by herself and that just upsets me - On top of it, she was getting ready to go down to to see my sister in the hospital. My sister had hip replacement surgery yesterday morning - which is hard on my mom enough - she hasn't been sleeping much, if at all. Mom was about to leave to make the hour or so trip to my sister and she won't listen to me - she doesn't even want to talk about it and I can tell she's in pain. She's upset she told me and wishes she hadn't but I had to get it out of her. This is terribly upsetting to me.

I'm praying for you and your mom and your sister. My friend always says raising parents is tough and that is so true. How can you help someone who doesn't seem to want help.

I'm about to burst into tears here!
It's true. My mom is 60 and my sister is 42 (I'm 29), and my mother is very stubborn and obstinant - can do things on her own kind of gal (so am I..sigh). I just worry about if it's cracked or whatever (I don't know!) ..it puncturing her lungs or something! I don't know! And to know she's on the road!!!!

Brooke, I am so sorry to hear that. Try to breathe deeply and to quiet down. If she goes to the hospital and has pain she might see somebody there and explain them what happened. We cannot do much when people do not want to listen, especially our moms. Mine used to be like this and never acknoledge she was ill or in pain. Now at 84, she is a bit better but still thinks she can do what ever she wants. I sometimes wonder if there is any kind of victim syndrom into these attitudes...

Brooke I am 54 and have cracked my ribs. They hurt like H### but not much that can be done with them. I am sorry that she is going thru this. My prayers are with your family.

Brooke, I'm sorry to hear that too, it's tough when you're not near. She will be fine, hopefully your sis will notice and convince her to at least get it looked at.

My sister broke three ribs a few months ago and they really can't do anything for them except give pain meds. I'm sure she will be ok. Sorry to hear that she doesn't confide in you.

Actually, she does confide in me more than anyone. That's why she told me. No one else knows!... it's frustrating because I just worry about her.

I know how that goes but you can only do for her what she will allow. One thing tho - if you make too much fuss when she does tell you stuff she may quit telling you. I've found it's a fine line between responding too much or not enough. Perhaps she worries about the time when she won't be able to take care of herself and may lose her independence so she clings to what she has now knowing what the future may hold....

I know she does. It's not easy for her getting older -- It's also a lesson I am going to learn on how to deal with all this. We are basically best friends when it comes down to it.
Just some new things I will have to learn.

HUGS to you Brooke. My mom, brother and i are the same as you, your mom ad sister age wise. And we are apart too. Its hard when things like this happen. Sometimes you need to just scream or cry and let it out.

Oh Brooke. I am so sorry to hear this. I do hope your sister is doing well, and as hard as it is for you (and your Mom) for her to be in pain there isn't alot you can do if she won't listen to you. And with broken ribs there isn't alot that can be done. I know that doesn't help much. All you can do at this point is help them both out as much as possible and be the support system.
