What kind of fencing do you have to have to have cows? I have 2 fenced pastures. But not sure if it is the right kind of fencing Thanks deborah

It depends- Is it a huge pasture? You can use barbed wire fencing, and I have seen people use Hog Panels if they are pretty docile. Also split rail fences. I probably wouldn't trust them to the flexible white vinyl stuff (The more decorative stuff that sometimes people put horses in) and electric fences will stop cattle if they are turned up high enough.
My 2 cows are in a pretty big pasture right now with field fence on 2 sides, barbed wire and cattle panels on one side and chain link on the other side. They haven't gotten out yet and they are 11 months old. And when they were little they were in with the goats with electric fence. So they have it all and it seems to hold them pretty good so far. I don't know about a whole herd of them, but with the 2 it's good.
We have 4 strand barb wire for our cows on pasture. Sometimes we run a strand of electic in the middle to keep them from reaching though. We have also used 2 strands of electic for temporary fencing. We don't have any high tensel fencing. I prefer the barb wire. First off, you don't get shocked off of it :) and second if the electric is shorting out or not working, they still have fence to keep them in. Also once a cow starts jumpiing fences, you will probely never be able to keep them in.
My Mona dosn't have a pasture...a big old pen on the back of the property is all....we fenced the entire thing in livestock panels (like hog panels but taller)..they come in 16 ft. lengths. They are very very durable and not as easily bent. We had field fence at first and she could just lean on it on wet days and the posts would start to go and the wire would let her just lean it over. She can't do this with the panels. Awesome stuff...livestock panels. We use t-posts and then nice wood posts on the corners.
