Good idea I am forever looking for rocks and wondering which ones have car goo on them and all. I just read on here that the white ones are toxic so I got the brown and had no idea what to do with the white ones.

Hi gals here is a trick I use - when the bridal season is over go to the craft stores and there is always tulle circles used for favors on sale really cheap. I use those in the bottom of pots because they will not fall apart and will aid in getting air to the roots. I also use them on top of the pots when I am starting seeds. I place it on the top and rubberband it. I do this because it will defuse the water and keep the soil in just in case the pot is hit with wind. Once the seeds touch the top of the tulle I take it off. What is great about tulle is you can wash it, bleach it and use it over and over again.

Now THAT is a wonderful tip!! I am always on the lookout for stones too, lol. But coffee filters, yes that will do the trick too!

Same with screen and old nylons too.....anything that will let water through but keep soil inside the pot. Coffee filters are great for so many things. Do any of you get Woman's Day? They always have a section where they tell you lots of ways to use common household items. Lots of good tips there. Thanks for this tip Karen!

Linda here is the link! I am going to make some this weekend. Just need to buy some white coffee filters. I have the unbleached ones and think the roses won't look so nice with those. Also need to buy some other material I need, like the tape.
A Tip: Better to watch the video instead of reading the description. The video makes it much "easier" to IMO.

Oh Karin that is such a good idea. My husband puts this tin sauces that drive me up the wall. I'll start replacing them with the coffee filters. Grand idea.

Grace that is a great idea for starting seeds. As for the drainage holes, I use shards from broken clay pots, but something else that works nicely is half an egg shell.

I've been searching through my email for this list! I finally found it!
1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave.
Coffee filters make excellent covers.
2. Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.
3. Protect China
Separate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish.
4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.
5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
< /I>
6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.
7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.
8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.
9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.
10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent
the soil from going through the drainage holes.
11. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as nee ded in a coffee filter.
12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Use strips of coffee filters.
13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc on them.
Soaks out all the grease.
14. Keep in the bathroom. They make great "razor nick fixers."
Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

Don't be forget those orphan socks that have holes in the toes, heels, etc. A sock will usually make 3 flower pot bottoms. 100% cotton socks will do a lot of the "Non-food" tricks listed here as well.
If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping! |

I use coffee filters as kind of a paper plate for popped popcorn-- and I've also used them in a pinch as interfacing when I sew!

Thats what I used also for the bottom of my pots (coffee fiter, newspaper...) & bury or dump the coffee beans at the backyard. The leftover coffee I add more water and water the plants. |
