Does your town or neighborhood have a small, local paper? It could be a daily paper or a small town weekly. Do you think your community would enjoy reading Letters from Birdland?

Why not write or call the editor and ask? I am interested in expanding my weekly column to other papers. If you succeed in convincing your local editor to carry my column, I'll send you a copy of my book, A Year in Birdland.

A Year in Birdland is a collection of columns from my first year. It is modestly printed (saddleback stapled paperback) and includes black-and-white photographs. Here's how to get your copy:

  • Contact the editor of your local paper and suggest my column.

  • Your editor can view sample columns on my gather page and contact me at mary.lucille.hays@gmail.com to work out the details of carrying "Letter from Birdland."

  • When Birdland appears in your paper, send me your address, and I'll mail you a copy.

I can't figure out how to put links here, but you can see my latest Birdland Letter (with pictures of my grandfather's peonies) here:

I just read your article, Mary. I like anything garden. And the pictures are great. Love the chickens. Are they yours?

Thanks, Chris. :) Yes, the chickens are mine. I have about 30 chickens and some other birds in an aviary. The chickens are free range and we had to build a coop to keep the chickens out of the garden. Do you do veggies or flowers or both?

I do mostly produce for the farmer's market and friends. I have chickens too and they are all over the place. What kind is the one on the cover of your book?

On the cover is Arthur. He is a mixie chicken from one of the patriarchs, Claude and Pepper, who are half Auracana.
What kind of chickens do you have? We have more and more little flocks in our neighborhood. It seems like every time I go to town we see a new chicken coop in a yard!

I made a facebook page for Birdland, where I'll post each week's column. You can find it here:

Oh let's see, I have several kinds right now. Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Americana, Anconda, and some game hens and mixed babies with a few red sex link chicks. That's about it.

Oh, I love Buff Orpingtons. I think they're my favorite. So gentle!

In this week's Letter from Birdland, you can read about the chicken show at the county fair, what happens when you don't mow the lawn, and who hatched out in the aviary:

In this week's Birdland you can read about my struggle with organization vs. the hoarding instinct:
