I am so sick of junk mail. Today I pulled a bundle of sale ads, catalogs and other odd and end junk mail out of my box. Some of it I shred or store to use for packing material, but not much. Some of it I use to line flower pots with holey bottoms. The rest winds up in the trash. :( Doesn't seem like much when I just look at my junk mail. But today I was at work (the apartment complex that I clean) and really took notice of the amount of junk mail that comes through the apartments each week. The complex leaves a trash can by the mail boxes for the residents to get rid of their junk mail. I can fill a 13 gallon trash bag with JUST junk mail. If the residents would only mind the signs and only discard their junk mail in the cans I could take it to the recycling center, but of course they also use it for every other kind of trash and garbage.
I wonder if there is any way to get my name off the "junk mail list". I know I can call the companies that send out the catalogs and get those stopped. But like the "free newspapers" and grocery store ads. I wonder how you get those stopped. Hmmmm Maybe I should go visit the gang at the post office.

Melanie the very best way I got rid of it was the postage paid envelopes, I fill them up with all the junk mail or anything I can find to pack the envelope, then I write them a sweet note(So you dont like garbage, well I dont either)IT COST TWICE AS MUCH FOR THAT LETTER TO GO BACK TO THEM. I get very little junk mail now. It might take a couple of mos but well worth it

Good idea, Miss Wilma!. I was getting credit card aps every day. I decided to save them all and see how many I got in a month. Well, it added up to about 3" a month. I finally read in one of them a # to call to have your name taken off the list and it worked!!!! It took about a month but we have not gotten a single one since. So look on the back of one of the credit card aps for the # and call it soon to get those stopped. As far as the rest of the junk, there has to be a # to call somewhere on the papers. The 91 year ols lady I look after gets so much junk mail and she goes through and reads it all like it's all important. Poor thing. She had even entered a sweepstakes to win $50k and had to send them $ and she did. I tried to get her not to but she wanted to win so bad. She finally went to the bank and they told her it was a scam and she burned it all. After I told her, too. But they prey on the elderly and it's awful.

What bothers me is the charities sending things....grandpa got an umbrella from the disabled veterans. Call me a softie, but I always feel bad about charities. The vets especially. We are in the DAR and regularly donate items and money to the causes. I am kinda getting more in the mind set to find out what a place needs (locally) and donate an item rather than money if I can. My heart is bigger than my paycheck :-p

If we get rid of "junk mail" and newspapers and magazines, catalogs and whatever, how will we get the news out? I have a DS and DDIL who both work at the USPS and they count on that mail for their income. I don't call it Junk Mail anymore. I would hate to rely on the TV and YouTube for the information I get. I read my newspaper every morning and also read through my mail that I get. I even pay my bills by mail instead of computer paying. I don't like the idea of having someone else put their hands in my bank account.
That's my 2 cents worth. I hope I have not offended anyone.

I have a standard e-mail I send to companies, to their customer service department. It works but it takes a little effort to do. My form says, "In an effort to reduce unwanted mail from my mailbox, would you please remove the following name from your catalog/advertising database." Then I type in the name and address exactly as it appears on the mailing label. I have all but eliminated my junk mail. For all the mail that comes in postage paid return envelopes, I stuff all the enclosures into that envelope with a kind STOP SENDING THIS JUNK! note on the order forms or applications and put it right back in the mailbox. I haven't gotten a credit card application in years.

Do what I do. If anyone sends you something with a pre-paid postage on it, I open it, refill their envelope with everything in it and send it back to them. They might as well get use of the postage they paid for!!!

Betty J, I sure do understand where you're coming from. My sister also works for the USPS. I didn't mean not wanting to receive "good" mail, I just meant like the things like credit card aps, I don't know what to really call them all. But like here where I live- my mail on a typical Monday consists of a Rural King ad, Scnucks grocery ad, Buy-Low grocery ad, credit card aps, this strange little newspaper that doesn't consist of any news it's just full of nothing. So for me personally the only thing out of that mess I will even look at is the Rural King ad, which if I got the Sunday paper I have already seen the same ad. My sister always compains bout mail on Mondays cause of all the ads. I know it's still mail and helps to keep our families in a job, but I guess it just seems like such a waste of paper and resources. I like when I hear my sister tell about how she made someone's day on her route by bringing an unexpected card or package and how brightening up their day makes hers a little brighter too.

Those folks working for the USPS work really hard and deserve their pay. They stand for a good 2-1/2 to 3 hours in the morning sorting our "junk" mail and then turn around and deliver it in the afternoon, all the while having to be back at the P.O. before 5 p.m. Then they have to turn around and do the same thing all over again. I agree with using up our resources, but here in the NW we are growing trees just for making paper. The little forests are not the same as our pine trees, etc. I hate to see waste too, but when I see all those folks picking up all this bottled water at Costco and then they probably toss out their bottles when empty. It just boggles the mind. Maybe that's why I make quilts--to use up all those little scraps of cloth.
I can see your point too, Melanie.
