Our rooster kicked the bucket about a week ago and our hens have completely stopped laying eggs.

1. I don't want another rooster. Will the hens get over this or do they typically not lay as well without a "man" around? We've always had a Rooster in with the ladies.

2. If I do get another roo...are there kinds that are less agressive? We had a Rhode Island Red and he was pretty mean.

My girls seem to be laying just fine and my rooster died last winter. That's odd that you had a RI that was mean. I've had rhodies for years and I don't ever remember one being aggressive. The only really aggressive one I had was a Bard Roc.

When I first got chickens years ago I didn't have a rooster. They laid eggs just fine. Theya ren't fertile so you can't hatch them. You really don't need a roo unless you want to hatch some. Otherwise, you're ok without and they should lay after they get over the grieving period.

I loved my BR roo. He was the best. The "new" rooster is a RIR. He's still young yet and really nice so far. I hope he stays that way. I have had some evil roosters, though.

I'm hoping they're just sad and will adjust. They are about 4 years old though....and it's time for new hens. Just can bring myself to get rid of them.

Maybe those roosters were nice to me because I always named them "stewpot" and told them if they ever tried to spur me that's where they'd end up!
