"Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."

—Thomas Jefferson

A couple of months ago it seemed that there was much concern regarding the Food-Safety-Modernization-Act-HR-875 since it could hurt our small organic farms and the ability to sell fresh/organic foods at farmers markets or sales right from the farm since they would not be able to conform to some of the outlandish standards set forth in this bill, etc. so I did some research.

I’ve put together a page with government and other websites you can visit and perhaps get a clearer picture of what this bill could mean.

PLEASE VISIT THIS PAGE AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

Next, will there be a bill to restrict the use of our own fibers (dying, spinning , waving) unless strict government regulations are followed. In fact, I believe there is a bill now that would prohibit the sale of certain handmade items .....Does anyone have information on this?

When will the insanity stop. It might just be the family farms that are the saving grace in a food crisis.

Good luck gals. Unfortunately, I'm in Canada but I'm sending my thoughts your way.

Trust me, I'll be reading all this. I haven't heard anything about the handmade items, but I'll certainly be looking hard for it. Somebody, please tell me, when is this madness going to stop????

I posted about this bill a couple of months ago. It's insane. I've written to my representatives, and I hope they listen. I also created a button for people to use on their blogs if they want to. I figure the more people who know about this, the better chance we have of putting a stop to it. Here's the link to my blog post with the button if you're interested:

http://summerstead.blogspot.com/2009/03/save-our-farmers-markets-and-gardens.html

Also, about the handmade items, I know it had fizzled at one point due to the huge outcry from people, but I don't know if it has been re-introduced since then.

Thanks, Rene regarding my blog page.

AnneMarie, I totally agree! Also, it seems that we're constantly brainwashed into thinking on a National Level...what about the good we can do already locally with other members in our communities (farmer's makets, buy-fresh-from-the-farm, bartering, sharing, and giving to others who may need extra if we have it to give). That's what I'll be striving for this year in my community...I think we are more empowered if we can feel a unity within our own area....
Beautiful British Columbia ...we live about 2 hours from the Canadian border ...Vancouver, and have visited often!

Julie......I found this website re: Save Handmade Looking forward to your opinion on this.

Hi, Heather...glad you posted! I've been searching for your blog page since somehow I didn't save it properly (won't happen again LOL!).

Regarding the handmade items I haven't had a chance to do much research. If it's on the back burner somewhere it will no doubt resurface
in a different disguise!

Well, I'm off to go digging in the yard...the sun is out and the rain has left it's unique clean smell in the air!

I posted some pictures of our chickens and doves on this week's blog if you want to check them out!

Re the Handmade bill. There is a lot of info on it on etsy. If the bill goes through small artists who make handmade toys or clothing for children will have to go through an expensive process to have them cretified as safe and the expense would put most cottage industries out of business. There has been a temporary hold put on passage of the bill and hopefully there will be enough outrage from the small producers that the law will be amended

It is my opinion that people who are immigrating to the US are starting businesses in disproportionate numbers.... They don't realize how much regulation they have to comply with... so they go ahead without considering all the problems...otherwise who would start a business knowing the cost of compliance?? I certainly would not.

I say go aheaed, ask forgiveness instead of permission....

Thanks for your input, ladies. It's so much more fun to talk about our hobbies, homes, families and fun things in general that I almost felt bad about posting this issue..but these topics need to be shared and opinions expressed. In the long run, by being informed, and our ability to at least TRY to do something about a problem, we can hopefully continue to enjoy or hobbies, homes, families...etc. as we have in the past (olden days LOL) without unnecessary and unfair government control, regardless of which political party happens to have it's 4 year term of glory.

We all admire people who aren't afraid to sincerely speak up for what they believe in...regardless of whether it's a popular opinion or not.
