Wow! talk about a spoiled KING! No wonder women suffer from depression....being a slave with no rights would make anyone depressed. Thank God for our modern lives. I wonder if men had their way they would still be treated that way. ;-(

I know SOME men would, Linda! How disgusting to think that women were made to think they were not only subordinate but inferior to their husbands - and through a WOMEN'S magazine! Ick.

Anyone nostalgic for the "wonderful 50's" should read that article. They'd get over that real fast!!

So much for the good old days! Thank heaven it wasn't like that in my reality. A Good wife always knows her place!? Good grief. No wonder they called their wife "the little woman". I remember some of the old guys when I was a kid calling their wives their "bitter half" gee---I wonder why.

i have to admit, this is pretty over the top! i wonder if it was a man or woman how wrote it. It's a shame that a house wife has always been seen as the lesser of the two, esp when keeping a house running properly is really hard work.
But what also is interesting is the difference between our and Asian cultures. Because most Asian families still operate similarly to this even now in our modern times.

Ha my DH printed that article and posted on our fridge a while back. A few of the points have some validity, I do try to meet him at the door and have the house tidy, but the rest of it is crap. |

I grew up in the 50's and my mother never treated my dad like that! She had to work outside the home and worked just as hard as he did. My husband's grandmother was the Good Housekeeping housewife. When I was home full-time I always tried to have the house picked up, the kitchen clean, and supper at least cooking. But as for the rest - I don't think so. When I worked outside the home then everything was split 50/50 - or that's how it should have been. Mostly is was 90/10 with my part being the 90!

I think just like within any ideal and within any era there are extremes. I am sure there were housewives that followed this ideal to a T; but I think there had to be a large percentage of the population that found a balance between the two. I like the idea of taking 15 minutes to rest before he comes home- can someone please explain this concept to my toddler?

This reminds me of Mona Lisa Smile.. the movie with Juliet Roberts. The one girl who married and had her perfect house, perfect life, didn't question her husband or ask him were he went.. He was cheating on her. If you don't talk with your husband, he'll go somewhere else! NOt every convo we have to have is a nag or a complaint. How 'bout giving my boring day a lift or cleaning my 'little treasures' up for me?
This is all laughable to us now, and I'm glad it is.

I think some of the above is good advice but some of it is hogwash. Late for supper or stay out all night?? I don't think so.
I heard a story about the Zigfields.(Zigfield Follies) Every morning Mrs Zigfield would get up an hour before Mr Zigfield. She would put on makeup and fix her hair, and dress in the prettiest thing she had in the closet. That is how she looked when Mr Z got up and went to work. He worked with beautiful women all day long. But he remembered his wife being beautiful that morning and he never looked twice at the women he worked with. They were supposed to have had a long and very happy marriage. She was the one that went the extra, but I'm sure the rewards were great.
This only works if it goes both ways. Some men are S.O.B. no matter how you treat them. |

Everybody reprints this article...but nobody ever reprints the letters to the editor that ran in the following issue! I'd like to see what the response was from 1955 housewives. This certainly doesn't match up with the attitudes of other women I see writing about home and family in the 1950s. Can you imagine Shirley Jackson writing this? Or Betty McDonald? |

I agree Belle, staying out all night if he's not fishing! I don't think so.... lol I do strive to make our home feel like a santuary for my family to come home to. A "soft place" to fall. I want my family to feel a sense of renewal and peacefulness when they make it to our little "arc of safety" we call home. A place we can renew our strength and prepare for another day.

I started looking for contemporary reactions, and found that this article may never have actually been printed. It may be a bit of an exaggeration, although not unfounded in truth. |
