Hi all. I am considering getting a couple of goats and a pig. I am wondering if any of you know whether it is feasible to house them together. The covered shelter is about 12X6 and outside area will be about 800 sq ft with frequent moves to other areas for weeding/tilling purposes. Obviously feeding will be done seperately. Just wondering if I can save some time and money and keep them all in the one space rather than having to create another one somewhere else. If anyone has any thoughts or insight into what works best I would really appreciate it. :) |

I have ALL kinds of barnyard critters-- goats and a pot belly pig included. Opal, the pig, is VERY moody and does not like to be bothered by the other animals. Honestly, I would NOT house a pig with goats. Amy's right, pigs can be VERY NASTY tempered and they also have a cannibalistic nature-- they WILL eat their own kind and OTHER "Meat" as well. And if you're talking a BARNYARD pig -- which can get MASSIVE -- you could be setting yourself up for disaster. Better to do as Alee suggested and give the pig it's OWN space. Just to be on the safe side.
PS: My oldest son does Mechanic work at a pig slaughter house, and you should HEAR some of the stories he tells me about the nature of those pigs! VERY SCARY!!!! They will pick on the weakest animals and eventually kill them. My guess is they would do the same to ANY animals they are housed with.

Yeah, I would not put pigs with goats at all. I had 2 pigs a few years ago in the same pasture with the goats but pinned up. The goats were kidding at the time and one had just had kids next to the pig pen. The pig was digging out under the fence and just about had a baby leg. If I had not been there, the baby would have been history, poor thing. And goats do like to be clean and dry. Where pigs like it wet and messy. Too total opposite creatures.
