That's the term i just read that Alee used on the May Day post. I think its cute. But it brought something to mind for me.
I work at a craft store part time and we sell fake flowers. We have people that buy them specifically for decorating their front lawns.
I personally find this a bit odd. It's a new idea to me.
I was wondering has anyone else encountered this or done it themselves? What's your take on it?
I can see pros and cons for using them.

Hi Karen!
People in my area do that sometimes. I have seen probably about 6 houses in my 2 mile walking path around my house that decorate their flower beds or flower pots with permanent flowers- especially during the fall/winter/spring until the gardens take off. Sometimes I see elderly people do it when they like their gardens but just can't get out to do it anymore.
I don't think I would do it because I think it looks a little off when there is snow on the ground!

Or when the color's faded from them? 
One of the subdivisions I work in has a few people who edge around their mailboxes with decorative concrete edging then they stick plastic flowers inside it. Before long the sun's faded them out and they just look, well, really sad!
But I do have a grapevine wreath hanging on the front of my house with silk flowers in it, so maybe I can't talk, huh?

well the have stuff that you can spray on the to slow down fading.
and yeah i can see how eldery people or anyone who just cant make it to the garden the way they want would use them.
but it kinda blows my mind plopping those little bushes straight into the dirt.

The first time I ran into it was in Brooklyn, NY. I lived in a largely Puerto Rican neighborhood and the older ladies seemed to be REALLY fond of unnaturally colored plastic and silk flowers in their pots and window boxes. It was somewhat garish when I first encountered it, but then, I got used to it. One lady went as far as to have bright green astroturf put down on her little concrete patio, along WITH her blue and other weirdly colored plastic flora.

After working as a Floral Designer I shudder when I see them. I hope I don't offend, but nature's colors are far more beautiful than man-made creations. I have broken down to purchase realistic looking silks for a wreath though :)

My neighbor has "permanent" flowers all over the front of his house. Up the sidewalk and in hanging baskets...everywhere.He put them out when his wife was still alive so she would have something beautiful to look at whenever he would bring her out in her wheelchair.So sweet.Even after she passed away he left them out and adds more as the older one start to fade.He can't grow flowers so he does this instead.

Well, now, Pam...those flowers are very special then, indeed. Nice way to remember her, too, I'd suppose (would be another reason to keep "refreshing" them).

When I lived in Florida, this was a huge trend there. The older people who aren't able to get outside or physically able to garden, used them a lot to "happy up" their lawns. I thought it was tacky at first, but then once I realized why a lot of them were doing it, I thought it was kinda cute. :D

Me, too, Jessie! I stand corrected, also. Thank you to Jessie and Pam for reeling me back in! When I've seen them, it hasn't been older people "planting" them. It's been what I considered lazy folks looking for instant gratification without the work. Something within me just rebels against plastic flowers, though. (They're used alot in cemetaries down here, which is okay by me.) I had a 30-something city girl to buy a house from me in one of our subdivisions and after she'd moved in, I stopped in to see if she needed anything and she had these HUGE plastic ferns hanging on her front porch. I couldn't keep a coherent thought in my head talking to her for looking at and distressing over those fake ferns!

i'm glad to know i'm not the only one who has mixed feelings on them. i think the most "disturbing" part is when you see something in a flower bed that is no where near being in season. kinda like they're cheating. but i can understand why some people would use them. I've always detested them, but the more i'm around them i can see how beneficial they are, we will probably even use them at our wedding just to save money.

I normally think they are tacky, but I do have to admit to using them one spring when my daughter was getting married in my herb garden. Her colors were yellow and purple and it had been planned for April when the daffodils would be in bloom all around the yard. That year, they bloomed early and the flowers had already died. I bought beautiful silk daffodils and tulips and put them in the green leaves and foliage that was still in the ground. Everyone bragged on how beautiful the daffodils and tulips were. The few people I confessed to couldn't believe they weren't real.

Pro and con, like most here. I have ONE huge obviously very fake flower in my back garden, just for fun lol. It was the bluest blue you have seen, it is faded now to a pretty light blue, more natural lol.
I can understand elderly and ill people doing this though. But where I used to live there was one lady who had tulips year round, all standing straight next to eachother like soldiers EEWWW!! Faded and just plain ugly.

Yeah thats kinda what i was thinking about when i brought this up Marian. I just keep picture this empty flower bed with these "perfect" tulips lined up in a row with maybe a bit of greenery between them.
