It is a very sad day today. It started out wonderful! It is our former Queen's birthday, and it is always celebrated to the extent. Everybody has the flag out, many dress in something orange (our royal color) festivities in the whole country, markets, music etc etc.. Today was supposed to be extra special: the previous Queens 100th birthday (she passed away a few years ago, but she would have been 100 years old today)So extra special.
BUT somebody decided to NOT let that happen. Somebody decided to drive a car into the crowd of tens of thousands of people surrounding the Queen today. She and her family were touring a city (as she does every year on this special day) a city that was happy to do this, to have special festivities etc. A person didn't want this to be a happy day for our country. That person decided to get in a car, drive up to the area our Royal Family was and decided to drive that car (or at least try to) into the Royal Family bus!! He didn't succeed PTL!! One way or another (Devine intervention I am sure)he drove into a monument. But he had made many casualties in the trying. 17 wounded, 5 death, 4 critically wounded.
SO it is a sad black day for my country. Most have taken the flag inside or are flying it half mast. All the festivities are canceled. The tv is showing it non stop. I have been watching it non stop. I am sad, terrified, upset and stunned. As are most Dutch.
Please pray for my country. Pray this might NOT have been a terrorist attack!! We are still unsure of Why, How, What and Who. We only know the person is a Male Caucasian and Dutch, that's all. He is now in the hospital, he was among the wounded, he is being operated on. He was interrogated before the operation and he told police it was his "intention to do this on purpose" whatever that may mean.
Please pray for my country.

I hadn't heard this Marian, how terribly sad and shocking! Those that were hurt and/or killed, their loved ones, and the whole nation will be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so sorry to hear about this.

Little update: It was his intention to attack the Royal Family. He is being accused of murder, (4 death) intent to murder (17 wounded) and attacking the Royal Family. I have no idea what the sentence to this all might be. Hope life in prison. It really is sad, I am still stunned and in tears.
Our Queen made a short statement on tv. You could see how sad and stunned she was. It is HER whole family that was/is under threat. Her children and their spouses, her sister and brother in law, their children and spouses. A bus load of Royals. Just think of how sad we all would have been had that person succeeded!! Our whole Royal Family would have been wounded, or maybe dead.
Our PM was abroad but flew back straight away and went to the town this all happened. He spoke with the people, the Family and reporters. GOOD for him, our country needs him.
CNN and many other stations around the world also report about this

Marian, I absolutely detest the news so I had not seen or heard about it, but I am so so very very sorry! It is so sad that there are those that find a way to try and ruin the world for everyone. Thank heavens for those who try to save it!! Many many hugs are sent your way and thoughts and prayers for all!!

* Latest update *
This has just been confirmed The man who did all this had died last night. He was among the critically wounded and he died,. After the operation he was on Intensive Care, guarded by police ofcourse.
In total there are now 6 people dead (including the man) and still 4 critically injured and in ICU, 8 are wounded but not critical.
The city where it happened is slowly awaking and trying to get back to "normal" whatever that may be. Many flowers are laid before the Palace and surrounding area's.
They are now talking about how Queen's day will be held in the future. Wether the Royals will ever be as open and approachable as they have been on a day like yesterday. IMO that is way to early, but that is the way the grinding machine works all over I guess.
I am still stunned. Stunned to think HOW this could have happened. Sad as well. Sad for the victims and their families, sad for our wonderful Royal Family. Sad for us as a Nation.
Thanks for the prayers, please keep them coming for the victims, their families, the Royals.

Awful, Marian. So very sorry. There is nothing sacred anymore--especially life. There is no rhyme or reason for all this senseless violence in the world. Some folks are just plain whackjobs.

Marian, how tragic. It just seems there is no where to escape all the evil this world holds now. I'm so sorry for the people who were killed and injured.
Trying to look on the bright side of this I come up with this: We,the farmgirls, here are as blessed as Elvis is that you were not among the statistics and are safe and well.
God Bless you and all affected by this tragedy.

Today's update:
The country is still in shock. The tv is having talk shows with all kinds of "experts"and witnesses etc. 7 people died. From the 17 wounded 8 are still in hospital. One is still very critical, one is seriously wounded but stable. Police didn;t find explosives, nor weapons in the mans house (the man who did this I mean) They are still trying to find out wether it was "just" him or if it was a group. They believe it was just him but want to be sure ofcourse. But since he died as well, maybe we will never know WHY. Not that there is any valid reason, but just to know WHY someone does an awful thing like this.
People are placing millions of flowers around the Palace and the nearby grounds. Also where the car crashed into the Monument

Hi Marion/Dutchy, I'm new to all this and hope it ends up where it's supposed to..I just wanted to say I'm sorry for all those involved and affected by this disaster. I'll be praying for all those involved... I'd just like to say though, reading all the replies, isn't it amazing that we have a forum where like minded people can come together from all over the world and share and comfort and discuss life's situations? It's amazing to be able to talk and share with someone clear over in the the Netherlands...What a beautiful thing! Thank you Farmgirl Connection! Best wishes to you Marion and I hope your community recovers quickly! |

Marian, I am so sorry your country had to have such a sad day. It seems to be no one person or country is immune to these sort of attacks. It sounds like it was just a very disturbed person acting on his own. We all know how unsettling and shocking this type of attack can be to everyone in the country and to all the families and friends of those people who were killed and wounded. I am glad your royal family was spared any harm. I hope all of your countrymen start healing from this very soon.

Marian Thoughts and prayers go to all of you in the Netherlands (proudly some of my ancestors came from there and are still there). I just don't understand the cruelty in people today. May God be with you all. Rae
