I picked MaryJane's book from a new book club I joined without knowing anything about it. It just looked interesting. What a great pleasure and it has tapped into feelings I've had a long time. I was born in Kansas in 1947. My grandparents owned a wheat & milo farm in Lyons. I've thought all these years that I've just been nostalgic for the farm life, but now I know that I'm really a Farmgirl at heart. What a nice feeling! I have lived in cities all my adult life, but have been an avid gardner and landscape designer. I'm married with 4 children, who are all off on their own now. Our hope is to find a small country property in Northern California one day soon, hopefully in the Fort Bragg area. I look forward to all this site offers and to chatting with you.

Oh Fort Bragg area is gorgeous. I went up there to visit oldest son and his wife when they lived there several years ago..just beautiful!!! What a fun place to live that would be!!
I grew up in Calif (central coast) but never in a big city. In fact, I have never been to San Diego..heard it is a nice place though.

Hi Jenny,
I enjoyed your message. I went to high school in Santa Maria and my brother still lives in the Morro Bay area! It's a small world. Where did you live close to on the central coast?

Welcome, Diane!

we took the boys over to fort bragg two years ago for a small vacation. Went to glass beach, ate great seafood, also went on the skunk train. Sure had fun.

My inlaws take a trip once a month down to Morrow Bay. They love it there.

look foward to hearing more about you.

Wasn't glass beach cool?? My son just loved it..he was only 4 or 5 at the time (he is 9 now) and just thought it was magical. (me too!!) and they had a wonderful needlework/yarn shop there too, and a couple neat used book stores.
Morro Bay is a place I always liked too. Growing up near there it was just a part of childhood. My mom used to take us up to look at the boats and look in the shell shops and go see the crummy little "aquarium"...there is a WONDERFUL quilt shop there.."The Cotton Ball". I do miss that place. They had the best fabrics and patterns ever! I took my older kids up to Morro bay alot too when they were little. It was about 45 min. from where we lived.

Welcome Diane!!
Fort Bragg/ Mendocino area is my absolute favorite place on EARTH!! I've always said if I ever win the lottery, thats where I would live. We've spent alot of time there when we lived in Sacramento. Glass beach was so much fun and Russian Gulch too. Hubby used to scuba dive the north coast. While he would dive, our son and I would explore. Wonderful memories!! Gee, I sure miss it all. Anywho, glad to have you on board. Looking forward to getting to know you. luzy

Welcome Diane!

My mom must have gotten MJ's book from the same book club. She didn't know anything about it, either, but thought it looked like a good book for me. I've been hooked ever since!

You are certain to have a good time here. All the gals are so friendly and warm n fuzzy.

Blessings
Catherine

Welcome! My name is Tamara, and I live on 73 acres of country property in Northern California (but not near the coast; I'm closer to Sacramento). My family and I love to vacation in the Fort Bragg area (Mendocino to be exact) but didn't see anything affordable out there. We have only lived here a year and a half, but so far we love it! We're looking forward to raising our kids in the country, and have been farmers-at-heart all our lives.

It's good to have another Californian in the group! =0)

Hi Diane and welcome!!! I'm originally from West Virginia but mostly grew up in California. I went to college in San Luis Obispo and that's where I met my husband. My aunt and uncle still live in Los Osos. I've talked with Aunt Jenny before about us both living in the same area but another one-it is a small world.

Anyways glad your here!!!

Hi Diane!
Well, I've never lived in California, but it sure sounds nice! Only visited there twice: once as a baby and last year for the Rose Parade. Of course it rained most of the time we were there! I would love to go back in the summer and do more outdoorsy things. We spent a lot of time shopping, going to Disneyland, getting lost in Hollywood kind of thing. It was fun, but I'm much more of a camping/hiking/roughing it person. The beaches were beautiful, though. And seeing mountains was great! Not too many of those here in IL! Well, I hope you enjoy your time here! So many wonderful people to share with!

Much love,
Laura

Hello to all,
Loved Mary Jane's book. It all brought back happy memories of growing up on a 200 acre farm 35 miles south of Chicago. After
college in FL, it was back to IL. I'm married to an attorney (now
retired), have a 15-year-old daughter & two cats. We live in a high
rise & I got tired of making a mess on my balcony when I planted my
flower boxes so I invented WEDGIE. Have been marketing it for 3 1/2
years now & it's been fun. I've met oodles of nice people, became a
Master Gardener & a docent at Lincoln Park Conservatory because of it.
Look forward to chatting with y'all!

Hi, Jenny! I'm a newcomer (see my post this forum), but your entry here caught my eye. I'm a Midwestern transplant FROM California-- lived there 40 of my 42 years. Went to the coast frequently...mostly Pismo area, Morro Bay, all the central coast, ya know. Loved it there! Grew up in Bakersfield, moved to Tehachapi about 113 years ago. A year and a half ago, we left and came here to rural Illinois. I LOVE it here! The only thing I really DO miss is the beach. (I still have my surfboard, lol! Not getting rid of that!) I hope to make a couple trips to the East Coast sometime, now that I'm that much closer to it...try my boards out there... nice to meet you! (I have a sister who is also an "Aunt Jenny"! Miss her, too!)

Hi and thank you all for your warm welcomes. Yes, this is a pretty part of the country, but I'm afraid too that we will get priced out of the chance to get property and a small farm in the northern coastal area of Calif, so going inland would probably make all kinds of sense. I'm kind of itching to get back to Kansas, which I left in 1959!, but I think it would take ALOT of convincing to get my husband John interested-- he has to keep in sight of the ocean! But I loved the thought to farm where you are while you're waiting & dreaming, so I started a compost bin which I haven't done in years and have 3 giant pots to put tomatoes in and I'm going to plant sweet peas and sunflowers soon. So I'm getting little doses of farming. Well I'm rambling, so time to go.
