the sack person that takes your groceries out to the car? I had never heard of such a thing until a friend of ours went to work as a sack "boy" after he retired from the banking business. Got board at home. He said his tips were more than his wages. His wife told us that he was the only sack boy wearing $200 shoes. LOL We usually go to the store the same day we deliver eggs. One of our customers always gives us a $1 tip. Then we go to the store and I give the $1 to our sack person. There is one guy (older gentleman) who will rush to be our sack boy. I told him why we give him the $1 tip and he could pass it on. Funny how $1 can make a difference.

Out here in the West we have to bag our own groceries and carry them out to the car. I have never had the pleasure of having someone carry my groceries to the car. Must be I live in the wrong neighborhood!

I usually go to publex and they have a sign NO TIPPING so I don't. I make a try of sweets from time to time. To me that is a hard job. When I was a manager at Sam's Club our cart boys were the lowest paid position and I thought they worked the hardest!!!

I do not, but I have heard of it. I think it depends where... When I worked at the Pie Shoppe there were customers that would tip us for their coffee and/or food. I worked some horribly nasty women who would push to get them. I wasn't in it to make money so I was like eh karma will get them for being nasty. The one guy tried to get me because he realized I was a nice person. When I eat or get beauty services done I till VERY WELL!!! when the service is done well. I used to tip at the coffee shop but have since stopped.

Yeah, years ago I did because they were paid like a waitress. Only a few dollars so tips were how they made money. But now they are paid better than minimum wage so I don't tip. In fact, I thought we weren't supposed to anymore unless we just wanted to. I always take mine out anyway because I either go to Aldi's or have so little.

I love how aldis has you manage your own cart with the quarter thing and then your own bags or boxes. Wonder what else we could cut down on if we brought our own? I know in some countries you take your own toilet paper. I always think coffee shops should lower prices if you bring your own cup!

Wegmans will not let the people take tips from customers, and if it's raining they will walk you to your car while holding an umbrella over your head and they will put your grocerys in your car also. I tell them they make me feel like I'm a princess. When I shop at Aldi's you have to put .25 in a cart to use it, and you have to bag your own grocerys. You get the .25 cents back when you put the cart back. I usually give my cart to someone who is just cooming in the store, they offer me the .25 but I tell them to pass it on to the next guy.

| We don't have any stores around here that you bag your own. I would almost rather than let some of the idiots do it for me. Now if my guy bags my groc, then I know they are done right and he knows how I like them. Another reason he is worth his $1 tip. |

Where I shop the cashier usually bags the groceries as they go. Then I take the bags out myself. If my husband is with me he will usually bag them for him or her.

At HEB, they almost always refuse the tip offered - but I usually refuse the offer of help out - my homeschooled son is almost always with me, and we can unload the cart ourselves. At Whole Foods, if I have a big enough order to need help, I tip and they accept.
I have never heard of the .25 cart deal. I or my son push the cart to the corral and that's that, at the grocery store, or Target.

I would like to point out that the proper term is courtesy clerk, not sack boy. I was a courtesy clerk for six months and only received two tips. They were greatly appreciated since the job was minimum wage. It was physically the hardest job I ever had. I was required to get carts, bag groceries, clean three restrooms every hour, bring forward, or face, all regular grocery aisles, count cans for refunds, take care of all recycling, and mop the entire store at night. Those folks deserve tips.

We don't really have any grocery stores left here that will take your bags to the car. However, I have tipped the folks at Tractor Supply Center and hardware store when they have helped me load things that are either very heavy or very hard to handle. Lord knows I wouldn't want to be schleping all that stuff around all day by myself.
Of course i am the one who also kept a cooler stocked with gatorade and waters for my roofing guys this past summer. I also fed them two of the days they were here. It is just who I am and if this sister can spare the dime she will. Times are tough for all of us and little show of grattitude can turn someone day around.

My son works at Krogers and he has never mentioned tipping.I am going to ask him when he gets home.It is an Union operated store, so they make better than minimum wage.I usually help bag the groceries myself (yes, I am just that picky) so no I do not tip.I will have to find out if they expect one though and perhaps give them a dollar on my big grocery days.

Wow, I never heard of tipping them when they help take your stuff out. I don't usually shop at the stores that do that because they are much more expensive than the bag-it-yourself stores which, don't have anybody to help take them out to your car. On the rare occasion that I do shop the more expensive stores, it's only for a few sale items and I've never needed help. BUT, I have accepted help at Zamzow's when I go there for the big bag of dog food and I'm sorry to say I never even thought to tip the guy! I will remember that from now on, though!

I never knew about tipping at the grocery store, although until the last few years I have never really needed any help. It's usually a really snowy day and it is hard to push the carts in the snow but most of the time there is no one around to help. Mostly the clerk is the one bagging. When I worked retail, at Penney's I was offered a $10 tip (back in '73, that was a lot) I had to refuse as we were not allowed to accept tips. :) However, the 'candy man' got around that. He would come in the store once a week (he was a big guy in overalls) and offer candy from a big bag! It was fun, I suppose in this day and age people would not really want to take the candy....oh, the simplier times were so wonderful. I guess innocence is bliss. :)
