I was looking for a good farm quote to put up on my refrigerator, and found these two. Just curious to know what y'all think about them, how they make you feel. Both are by Antoine de Saint Exupery.
"Only he can understand what a farm is, a country is, who shall have sacrificed part of himself to his farm or country, fought to save it, struggled to make it beautiful. Only then will the love of farm or country fill his heart."
or
"Perhaps love is the process of my leading you gently back to yourself."
Although the first one provides me a lot of food for thought, it's the second that one will go up on the fridge. My love of farming, and everything that entails -- my love of weaving, canning, gardening, baking -- my desire to learn new aspects of self-sustainability -- spinning, knitting, crocheting, making butter -- it seems to me that my love of farming is my personal process of leading myself back to my heart and my true love.
With the first one, I do agree, but I also agree with Mary Jane that being a farm girl is within the heart. You don't have to have an actual farm to sacrifice to save it. Some times, I think we sacrifice a lot, and struggle a lot, just to save the farm girl within us, and to make her a more beautiful person, with or without a 'traditional' farm!

Those are great quotes, the first one reminds me of a bumbersticker I saw that read "no farms. no food." So to me a soldier fights for all the land and farmers not just his. and the second one I need to believe more and more in my life. My grandma, then mom and now I have a magnet on the fridge that says "Behind every successful farm there is a strong woman."
but I think the saying has evolved, because I think it should read "Every successful farm is ran by a woman."
Whatta ya think? Why do we have to be "behind" why can't we be fronting? Maybe I am too serious today. . .
Best, h

I am the one who runs this little piece of heaven. My hubby helps when he's here but I do most of the work.
I really love what you said, Julie. I need to re-examine why I am doing what I do and why I do it. I was just thinking about this last night. I do love what I do but I think I get so overwhelmed with ALL that needs to be done that I lose my joy. And I don't want that to ever happen. I believe I got the love of farming from both my parent's families from way back. Both sets of grandparents were ministers and grandmothers were the farmers and had to do all the gardening and milking and raising kids. So it's in here. I just don't want to lose sight of it.
