I just checked the weather forecast! It looks like we are going to have a few close shaves with freezing weather, but it should all be above freezing from now on! So I think today I am going to dig over my garden again and then plant the things I have!
Rule of thumb here is plant after the last freeze COULD be. That is Mothers Day. Of course we always plant early and lose a few things and some grow like crazy. A shot in the dark, I say. The farmers are out plowing and disking so it is soon. I did see some farmers planting potatoes yesterday--so that means the ground is no longer water logged. LOl MB

Well I had to work the soil to get the sod out, and I have a huge ton of homework to do. So I got one big swatch done and 2 rows of sweet peas planted. Tomorrow I will plant some more peas and beans, then I will be planting my tomatoes and carrots. I might end of digging a bigger garden patch and I have to figure out where to put my watermelon!
Good for you, Alee! I am jealous. But I may be getting started later today or tomorrow. The tiller guy called and he should be here soon. Then it's off to get all toses potatoes and onions in the ground. When I do that I will feel so much better. I have worried about those for weeks now. I need to go ahead and cut them up so they'll be ready to go in the ground. I can hardly wait now!

Ugh!! The slugs are eating my seedlings as fast as they come up!!! I bought some supposedly non-toxic slug bait from Gardens Alive called Escar-GO! (clever name) which stopped them for a couple of days, but I just went out and checked again and even though the bait is still around the plants, they have eaten more!!! I'm about ready to go out there at night with a flashlight and a shotgun and blow those slimy buggars to kingdom come!!! Is Washington the only place that has such a time with slugs? I never had any in my Montana garden.
Tiller guy just called. He'll be here first thing in the morning!! I can get started now. Supposed to rain tomorrow evening. I should be done by then, I hope. I am so relieved.
Now, has anyone ever cut up potatoes to harden off before? I never have but have heard of doing it. I might just go ahead and cut them all up today and that will give them overnight to harden off. I'll try anything once.
Sherri, have you tried salt? Or bowls of beer? Even diotamacious earth or ground up egg shell or oyster shell. You can get that at the feed store or Tractor Supply. Anything that will cut them up when they crawl over it. Rock salt is good but oh so grose and gooey! They are disgusting little creatures for sure. Do yo have chickens? I guess that's why we don't have many slugs. Good luck.

Alee - just be careful. Our last frost date is listed as March 29 and we had a frost on April 6th this year. I went ahead and planted on the 11th - 2 weeks after our last frost date. Hopefully we wont get any more.
If you are still in Billings your last frost date is listed as May 29th. I lost quite a few plants to frost one year. It is very disappointing! Just be careful! One night of forgetting to cover them and you can lose all that hard work!
