I have a BAD picture on my blog but it is NOT a snapping turtle but has red on the side of it's face; someone said it is a softshell? I was able to buy turtle food at the store....it must be pretty common to see them around here. She/he was headed for the road when I was mowing and I almost ran over her. Not sure what kind of environment I should provide for her? We have LOTS of armadillos here and I know she would not have made it overnight in my yard. The armadillos dig looking for turtle eggs and grubs and I have all kinds of holes all over my yard to prove it!!!. Anyway....does anyone know anything about turtles? I think I will go to Walmart tomorrow and try and get a book or I'll Google and try and find some info. Thanks for any info you gals can provide!

My ex had turtles (don't ask) and I think that one you found is a red ear slider. You can look it on the internet and find out what it eats. I think it is flys and bugs and such. Hope that helps.

as a rule of thumb, turtles are conivores and tortises are vegitarian(sp)....I have a tortise, "Scooter" who whe have had for over 25 years...he loves most all fruits & veggies. I went to a local reputable pet store & they were very helpful and then I contacted the 'Tortise Rescue' back in California(where I lived at the time that I resuced Scooter) and they too were equally helpful. Sandra, hope you get lot's of good help. An aquatic store or any pet store probablly sells turtle food...but please keep one thing in mind...turtles & tortises are known to cary "Sominella" so be sure to wash after handing your little friend. Our Scooter is the perfect pet....doesn't bark, doesn't have to be leashed & taken for a walk, sleeps all Winter and is not fussy about how you feed him, just so long as you feed him... oh and "the scooter poohter" as we call it, well it goes in the compost! lol! >^..^<

The turtle you found from the picture on your blog looks like a red eared slider. There are many sites on the internet with pictures and information about them.
These are basically an aquatic turtle, so she will need a lot of water, plus a place to get out of the water when she wants to. The commercial turtle food is a great base diet for her. Red eared sliders are omnivorous. In addition to the turtle food, she will enjoy crickets, cooked chicken chopped very fine, dark leafy greens such as spinach, dandelion greens, and romaine lettuce. The more variety in her diet, the better off she will be.
Definitely search the web for more care information. I also recommend checking with the state laws for the area you live. Some states have banned keeping red eared sliders as pets.
