Stephanie, I have never raised true Dominiques because they are pretty rare. A true Dominique has a flat comb on its head. I have gotten chicks before from Southern States and they told me they were Doms, but they ended up being Barred Rocks. I think alot of people think that the color makes them Dominiques, but it doesn't. Either way if you have your heart set on Doms, just be sure to order them from a reputable breeder.

Hi Stephanie!
What Gena says is very true. In college, I worked at a feed mill and started having "Chick days" in the spring and had the hardest time trying to explain that the black and white chickens were not Dominiques, but Barred Rocks. I was really just wasting my breath on most people, who still insisted on calling them "Dominickers". Either way, I don't think you can go wrong, chickens are so much fun! My Barred Rock hens were my favorite of the four breeds I have had. Good luck! |

We carry true Dom's with the pea combs. Another way to tell the difference is that Barred Rocks have definitive bars of black and white, the Dom's markings are sporatic and mottled. I know we are sold out on them until the beginning of June, but feel free to look at them on the website. www.meyerhatchery.com

One more thing: Dom's are really great chickens. A breed that's been placed on the endangered list for awhile but thanks to people like us who have a passion for heritage breeds they are making a comeback. Originally raised as a dual purpose breed. Meaning good layers, good for the pot. If you get them, please get a rooster to keep the breed going. I'm back to work on Monday if you have any questions and the hatchery number is toll-free.

Out of ALL the heritage breed chickens I have raised over the years the Dominiques are one of my FAVORITES!!!! They are fabulous birds. I have never had a mean tempered rooster and the hens are the best egg layers and mothers, not to mention the fact that they simply ARE beautiful birds.
I have had hens as young as 9mos hatch out broods of 12-15 chicks, and raise nearly all of them to "adult hood." Rarely did I have to brood their chicks myself. The hens are also the "Leghorns" of the hertiage chicken world. I got TONS of med. size brown eggs from them. So many in fact, that they laid them faster than I could give them away!
I still have one or two "Pure" dominique hens, but most of them have passed on from either old age or predation (namely my oldest SON-- as far as the ROOSTERS go that is), but I will certainly be getting more of them in the future. I would strongly encourage anyone looking for good, productive, HERITAGE breed chickens that will raise their own chicks and provide LOTS of eggs for your family and to sell-- Dominiques are DEFINITELY the way to go! ~~~ Tracy

I had some, and loved them! They're beautiful chickens, and great layers. I have the barred rocks now, and they're equally as good. Because of my egg sales, I really need chicks that lay the larger brown eggs -- rhode islands, barred rocks, etc. Still, I'd have doms again if I could find them!
