Oh, Bridget, I have so been there....best thing is to get away from it for awhile and then come back to it. You will find that after a "breathing" spell, you can think more clearly. I get to the same point when I am trying to clear out, I lose focus and REALLY want to keep everything...after a couple days of not dealing with it at all I can think more rationally...

Have you considered NOT saving things for a yard sale, but just getting rid of things outright? I used to have a whole room of things I was "saving" for a yard sale, but I never got around to actually having a sale! I started just boxing EVERYTHING up and either putting it at the curb with a "free" sign or taking it right to the city mission. If you get rid of things quickly, you don't have time to go back and change your mind!
Please keep your chin up...my mother-in-law has a compulsive shopping / hoarding disorder, and I understand how difficult it is to let go of some things.

There is a street wide yard sale and I have the price tags so I WILL do the yard sale :) But I get you! What we don't sell I will take to goodwill:)

Bridget- How about this. Those things that you are starting to worry about regretting and such, but don't have a use for currently (or space or whatever) Put into a box and put the date on it. List what is on the box on the outside. Store it away (under the bed or garage or whatever) and if you don't get into that box for the next year, then go ahead and donate the whole thing!

I highly suggest Alee's idea. Also, whatever is getting sold, tag it then put into a box for the yard sale and box it up. Then you don't have to look at it. I had to clear a HUGE spot in the garage for 4 weeks to get it done. Also, take a break and then come back to it. I started with my bedroom and completely did it so I had a nice place to land at night, after all the craziness. Then I did the kitchen because it was the second most used room in the house.I am an all or nothing kinda gal and I carved out 1 day of JUST decluttering, organizing and cleaning. I went from 8-4 and I got a LOT done in day. (((HUGS)))

Just do it. I have a rule that if I haven't used it in 6 months, then I don't need it or will wear it again (excluding classic clothes or my Carhardt coats). Be ruthless. Steel your nerves and set your chin and chuck the stuff out!

You can do it! I'm like catcharm, I set a mission for myself and then go for it. When done, it's such a nice feeling!!

Also, sitting down and making a priority list for you life is important. I realized that I am education junky yet I had no nice spot to put my computer, paperwork and just spread out. The coffee table wasn't working with a 3 year old and constantly having to move my laptop. So I carved out an area just for this.

I also realized I am not a "crafty" person nor do I bake enough to keep all the supplies I had. I now have a muffin pan, a cake pan, some material for making pillows, needle and thread and one cross stitch I am working on. I have Charlie help me in the kitchen, so I don't have to be all Martha Stewart with him. We can just cook together everyday and that his special enough.

Clothing- well...I am still a clothes horse. Can't help it. I have a corporate wardrobe and a home wardrobe and the 2 can't intermix, so it is a necessity. I did divy up the closet into these 2 categories and it makes my life easier when getting ready and even hubby knows where to put things back after the wash. : )

Toys- I cut WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY back. I packed up some stuff that Charlie really doesn't play with and I will probably just donate it at some point. It is one bin, out of the way. I edit every few months, getting rid of broken, out-grown, or just too many pieces to keep track of. I am really picky when it comes to toys. If it comes with 300 pieces, forget it. I don't like having to pick them ALL up everyday.

Things I do not own in my house- books, chotskies and collectibles. I can get what I need at the library and my house is "decorated" with pictures, a few big stars, a few large candles w/holders and things like that and I like the added texture and colors from my furniture and things like pillows and curtains. Simple but sassy!!! : )

I also had to declutter due to allergies. I had about 6 bins of "heirlooms" that I couldn't put out because they were mite and dust collectors. I finallly donated them. Rather have someone else using them than them taking up space and me constantly worrying about breaking or ruining something just to store it.

That doesn't sound dumb at all! That's what clutter does! It pulls you in!!

Speaking of lists...hehehe...I have been known to make lists of my lists... Oh, yes, I have sure done that!! I can get pretty bent out of shape when I don't complete the whole list. Something about that is obsessive, I'm sure! :-)

Bridget; I recently read an article on decluttering because I really need to keep a goal in mind to get rid of anything I "might" use someday. I heard this story (as best as I can remember it) and it is helping me get into the right mind set to streamline my life.

A man was traveling cross country and needed to cross a turbulent rain swollen river. He found logs and vines and built a strong solid raft which got him safely across the river. He didn't want to just abandon the raft because it was so well made. So he went through the rest of his life with the raft tied to his back just because he might need it some day.

I'm realizing that sometimes I feel like I have a heavy weight on my back from the things I hang onto because I might need them some day. Good luck with your decluttering. Sage :)

Im bad about the yard sale thing. If I keep stuff for yard sale Im all piled up. So I trash it, or give it away. Whichever happens to be there first, lol. But if I was more organized, the yard sale would be great!
