Ok Who said chickens are dumb? I have a broody hen, Miss Goldie. We do not have a rooster.. She has been laying an egg a day since January when I bought her. We have been thrilled to have her join the other 2 hens in the Hen Studio. However, for the past three days She has not left the nest. I have an original fake egg in the nest where all three lay. Today to intice the other hens to lay in a new nest I have put another fake one in a nest box beside her nest. She actuall moved it and is sitting on two fake eggs,I could not believe my eyes, so I removed it again she did the same thing...after a few hours this morning I did manage to remove a real egg from her nest . She was not happy with me for removing it. My two other chickens use the nest she has taken residency in so I put one of the fake eggs in another nest on the floor, I am wondering how she will get that up to her shelf. She can see it there and is squawlking like a Mad hen. I suppose if I get a rooster she will be a great mama hen if Nature plays her part in the production. She certainly is no, birdbrain!

Cheryl, do you have access to fertile eggs? You could put some under her. Looks like she wants to be a momma bad.

Mine is still sitting on her nest. She had 5 eggs under her and I put 3 more under her the next day. That hen ain't budging off them either. She's got 15 more days to go!

No Kristin I don't .. I have 7 more chickies over at Gails because I don't want to intregrate them yet until they are older & the weather is warmer so they can be outside a lot. I will just keep taking the real eggs from her until we get a rooster.. maybe later this year.

Cheryl, is Miss Goldie a Buff Orffington? I have ordered some Buffs and a Rooster. I hear they are real broodie. That is my plan. I plan to let the ladies set when ever they want to. Just to build up my flock. Maybe sell a few.

My buff was broody so I got some eggs from a neigboring farm that had roosters. 5 days before the eggs should have hatched she decided to quit sitting! I didn't have an incubator so I guess they have died. That makes me so sad!

When they go broody they stop laying other eggs. The other chickens will lay eggs by her but she will stop laying.

How long will she do this.. the other two hens have stopped laying now too.. for about 4 days but they are not "setting on empty nests all day in the coop...they come out each morning when I open the door & remain out most of the day foraging around the yard,.

Cheryl, I have had a hen sitting on a nest of eggs since March 31st. I have not gotten a single egg from the other 2 that were laying since then. I don't know why they do that. Before when I've had alot of chickens, they never stopped laying. Very strange. The eggs should hatchthe 21st if all goes well. She has not moved for several days now. I put a little foof on a block that's in front of the nest. She might get up but she's right back on in a few minutes. Good mamma hen.

What is going broody? I'm a new chicken rancher with 4 araucuna girls. I'd love to learn more about them. They're only 5 weeks old so it will be awhile before eggs.
Any advice for a new chiicken raiser?

The weird part is There are NO eggs under her, what does she think? the egg fairy will come and slip a bunch under her? I do not understand a lot about these birds for sure. And the other two have stopped laying as well.. When I make her leave the nest to eat.. she quickly eats like she is starved , I closed the entry so she had to stay out.. when She gotr back in she went directly to the empty nest and hunkered down.... I even put a fake plastic egg in a nest close to hers thinking the other hhens would see it and lay there but she some how moved it under her,.. Chickens Ya gotta love em..

My ex-husband (a city boy) was asked to gather eggs from the neighbor's henhouse while they were gone. They had a broody hen in the nest. So, he took off his cowboy hat and put it over her head and reached under her and plucked out the egg. When he told me about it, I almost died laughing. It worked and he didn't get pecded.
