This is an "organic" trellis we built out of our lilac prunings last spring to grow hops on.
I thought we could share ideas on different ways to build a trellis.

I haven't repurposed anything for the purpose of trellises yet but it will be on the agenda next year. I have lots of raw material:)

Thanks! This year I have collected a bunch of broken bunk beds and intend to take all the pieces to build some crazy maze with them for the kids to play in. This trellis pictured was more like a tunnel last year. We probably planted to many hops because in the height of summer they nearly tore it down. Thank goodness we used thick fencing twist-tie wire to hold the branches together. My husband was so sad when he went to harvest his homegrown hops for his homebrew and found them infested with aphids. Those little buggers sure do like their hops too!

I plan on doing something like that in my garden this year with my apple tree prunings. They are all very straight so I thought I would build a tipi or some kind of structure to grow pole beans on, then my son can play inside or underneath it.
Those must have been some awesome lilac bushes to have prunings like that! We have a rather forlorn-looking lilac bush on the north side of our house that needs some pruning I think. Well, I think it needs more than just pruning. Maybe a relocation plan, too. |

Does the weight of the vining plant hold the trellis in place or do you have to put it into the ground? I know that's probably a dumb question but with the amazingly dense clay we have for soil here, it's one that's stumped me...

We dug maybe 1/2 a foot hole for each vertical branch. We also tied it together with wire. I thought it was overkill but (I hate to admit it) he was right. I think the vines (in our case Hops) would of carried the trellis away if it could. I am taking pictures of the other trellis we did tomorrow and will post it.

Really cool. We have Quaking Aspens here that may be pliable to build something like that. Afraid my lilac isn't that large yet. Great idea Heide thanks for sharing it. Can't wait to see what your other trellis looks like. I need ideas. (hint hint)

I made the picture large so you could see more detail; it blends right into the slope behind it. As soon as we built it (this one is of sugar maple prunings) we put lawn chairs under, thinking we would rest in the shade, unfortunatly the bird showed us who was going to live there. lol So it is more of a giant bird feeder/bird house. We hung pinecones filled with peanut butter and bird seed on them last fall. You can see where I weeded the clover off the Hops yesterday. It was so delightful to find the little purple buds reaching for sky. I will be sure to post it this summer when they are in their finest glory.

In case you were wondering what was in the middle of what we call "Heide's happy hop house":
There is a tiny circle of Forcythia and Pinecones my daughters placed there while singing a song for their dearly missed grandma, my mom. So sweet. . .

What a wonderful idea, that trellis is so great. We had hop vines growing on the side of the house I grew up in. It is such a lovely plant. I read somewhere that if you stuff a pillow with dried hops, you will sleep better. Sounds entirely possible to me. I'm looking forward to seeing your garden emerge from its winter sleep.

ok ladies, I promised I would post a pic of the after. This is one I took last night while we were hostessing the monthly Prosser Wa Farmchick meeting. Sorry it is so blurry but is was getting dark and I wanted to go without a flash. . .
I will take a better one soon, but y'all can see how wild the Hops went, if your quiet enough you can hear them growing!

Old spindle type baby cribs, side panels on end, head and foot boards, great for any kind of vines, flowers or veggy. I pick them up at yard sales etc. They will last 2 -3 seasons. I have creek willows on my property, the branches from these cut green will bend to almost any shape, and when dried will stay that way. Heide, I love your pics and imagination.
