So there I was early this a.m. at work sitting at the computer in one of our animal barns..... barely much past 6 a.m. i got up form the computer and suddenly felt "something" on the back of my knee heading up toward my thigh. Wasn't a stray piece of hay...too early to have been feeding anything yet.

I was wearing jeans mind you, so that only could have been 1 thing.

Yep. Quick as lightning I grabbed at whater it was in my jeans and squooze as hard as I could and didn't let go for a few very long seconds.

Then hobbled to the bathroom, and very carefully while still grasping my pants, shucked 1 leg out of my jeans.....then the other, then shook them out.

Out popped a squished ROACH! And a mighty big one at that.

Ohhhh yuckie!!!!

Even though it was a little on the chilly side and possible rain forecasted for later, I toughed it out and wore shorts for the rest of the day. Oh, and washed my jeans quick like too. BLECH

A few months back I had 2 false alarms. first time I was in a hay barn with a co-worker and had to drop trow. (nothing than thank goodness) Second time I was walking out of a field at home. Same little tickle on the back of my knee. It even crunched. Only problem was we now have neighbors almost across the street, and from where I was, they could have seen a little. Luckily our barn was close. So I grabbed my pants again, squeezing hard and hoping to kill whatever it was, dropped trow again...and found nothing. No blackberry prickers, leaves or anything. i would have just walked back to the house in my undies...but again...neighbors

When I get back to work tomorrow a.m. I'll tuck my pant leg into my socks oh and place a circle of boric acid around my chair ha ha

I thought you were going to say it was a snake. Yuck. A roach is bad enough, though. So what do you do at work in a barn with your computer?

I thought you were going to say it was a young mouse- being in the barn and all! Eww! Roaches are horrible. Yuck. I might start keeping a pair in a sealed back down at the barn for "just in case"

Our office is in an area off one of the rhino barns.

To put this in perspective, you can walk into the feed room and just SEE all the roach egg cases stuck to the wall.

It's disgusting.

We use baits, but with constant access to the outside, pluse this being a very old building, I tend to keep everything off the floor.

And now I;m typing and sitting here indian style w/ my feet off the floor.

I come in an hour early to have some "me time".

I could have almost handled a spider. Usually when they are trapped they curl into a ball. And I probably would have felt a bite too.

And we of course have mice. I have had 1 or 2 run beneath my feet when I lifted a shoe off the floor (mighty tempting there not to stomp btw). But this was a fast tickle/really weird sensation.

So even though the jeans were put through a good scalding wash yesterday,do you know just how mental I was this a.m. when I put my jeans back on??

Seriously I was ready to bum around in shorts again. Any little sensation around my knees and I'm freaking out.

And to answer the question, we get e-mails from bosses, updates via computer and can do general web surfing with certain limitations.

We also file elecronic daily reports

And I share space with 4 other keepers on any given day, so computer time is a premium

Yea, I say a small prayer sometimes when I have put on a pair of my garden overalls. Especially in the summer when I'm already in shorts.

Those pictures circulating on the internet that show body parts half eaten away are enough to make anyone think twice about spiders.

Guess that's why the big harry ones don't bother me as much and the smaller ones

Ewwwwwwww! Having a creepy crawly in your britches is NOT pleasant. I've been there too. I've also had a MOUSE under my pillow (HONEST!!), under the covers at the foot of my bed (YES! it's TRUE!) and I had a RAT jump on my chest in the middle of the night last Winter (not this one).

I thought the rat was my CAT, Scarlett, but it wasn't quite heavy enough, and when it woke me up I started to role over (glad I didn't GRAB it!) and it jumped on the floor and ran out of the room. I know it was a rat because we discoverd a big hole that had been chewed by the front door under a small rug we had there. That hole was PROMPTLY patched, I assure you, and the CAT thoroughly reprimanded for not doing her job!!! (I also got ANOTHER cat to take up the slack!) That's country livin' for ya! again I say ... Ewwwwwwwww....!

Whoa Nellie! I've had the same experiences....I just killed a brown recluse on my toilet the other night. I know how it happened....after painting my bathroom I pried up the heat vent to clean it well and must have "disturbed it"....and I have Terminex and he was just here!
I bought a couch a few years back at the thrift and it was a great price but had roaches (unbeknownst to me!!!....no extra charge for those) and they filled my house in no time....I called Terminex and it took 5 months to get rid of them all....YUCK!!! I lost weight during that time....imagine that....was afraid to eat anything and they were in my kitchen and when I would see one it would "kill" my appetite! Not sure it was any cheaper than Nutrisystem though by the time I got the bills from Terminex!
Years ago when I was gardening it felt like something was biting me but I didn't pay much attention and then WHOA NELLIE!!!! I ran into the house and stripped and there were "ants in my pants" literally! They weren't fire ants but they left welts on me and although I'm not squeamish...I pay attention to that "crawling feeling" whenever I get it!!!
Anna do you work in a zoo? What is the rhino barn? Real rhinos???? How cool? I love animals and studied for a bit to be a vet but did not follow through and instead went into computers.....always regretted it. What a great job you must have. Tell me more!

Years ago, when I was a teenager, something bit me on my upper thigh and I hit it and held on to it - yep, a roach. Them suckers bite! A few years ago when I was stationed in Hawaii, I got up in the middle of the night and went stumbling blinding into the bathroom to do what I got up to do. When I got ready to leave, there was a huge cane spider the size of my hand on the side of the bathtub that I passed to get in and would have had to pass to get out. I jumped up on the toilet lid screaming like a banshee until my late hubby came in and killed it. They had been burning the sugar cane fields and the wildlife was taking refuge wherever they could. The spiders are not poisonous, just really big and really ugly! A few days later I could hear the guys in my motor pool freaking out and sure enough, a big old cane spider on the wall. I went back in my office, picked up a big ol' piece of wood, and dispatched that poor ugly thing. It's really sad when a woman has to make someplace safe for a bunch of big ol' burly men.
