I'd love to read responses to Terri's question as well. We feed only certified organic and the price has gone from $13/bag last March to $21/bag this March. There's only so much you can pass on to your customers.
The two brands we buy are "Top Shelf" feeds and "Otter" feed. Our local feed store "WillowWind" brings it in as most people around these parts will only use organic. One of the reasons it's probably so expensive here is that we live on an island and it would have to be trucked here from the mainland. You would be shocked at the price of alfalfa, makes lifestock pretty much prohibitively expensive. Could you and other farmers in your area agree to buy it from your local feedstore if they bring it in? Di
Hey farm girls don't forget you can give chickens old stale bread or cereal; vegetable peelings; old milk or any other not molding in food department. Look at the discount stores that sell unsold items from other stores; they have potato chips; crackers etc often cheap!
