I'm starting to pack my lunch for work (lunch is provided free where I work, but it usually consists of chicken fingers and French fries or heavy butter / cream sauces), and I would like to make a big batch of Granny's vegetable soup on Sunday, portion it out for the week, and pop one in my lunchbox every day. To keep it from spoiling later in the week, I guess I'd have to freeze Wednesday - Friday's portion. I was thinking about packing them in pint mason jars. Does anyone know if you can microwave soup in the jar?

I'd think it would be fine, as long as the lid's not on and they're not straight out of the fridge. I'd be concerned that the drastic temp change would cause it to crack/break.

A friend told me she can freeze things in Mason jars, as long as they are the wide mouth, straight up and down with no taper at the top. For some reason the ones that taper crack when freezing...even if you leave some space.
And I second letting the jars come to room temperature before putting them in the microwave...

Oh, that's right. You can't freeze the ones with the shoulders because when what's inside freezes it expands, which will push up on the shoulders and break the glass.

Back in the day that's how I canned my first ever batch of pickles. Did ok, but wound up boiling sticky brine all over the inside.
I didn't have a canning kettle at the time. |
