I just read a really beautiful book called Ghost dogs of the South by Randy Russell and Janet Barnett. This husband/wife team are professors of folklore and they traveled the South collecting folktales concerning dogs. The stories feature dogs' devotion even after death and whether or not you believe that those you love never really die, the stories are touching, heartwarming and capture a bit of the history of our Southern states. Another beautiful feature of the book is its photographs. The authors collect old time photographs from between 1890-1915. The ones they have chosen to showcase in this book are ones that portray the intense relationship between humans and dogs. The one on the cover is especially poignant because it is full sized, but all the photographs are really lovely and capture a long gone era. I highly recommend this book of folklore!

I've never seen a ghost dog, but my childhood dog used to appear to me in dreams and talk to me--don't remember what she said, but it always felt as if she were still with me. I've also had dreams where I "talked" to a deceased person on my cell phone, so maybe it's just me. Sounds like a great book, though.

I already talked about it in Backyard Buddies, but I lost my pup (14 year old pup!)Zena a few weeks ago. I still feel like I see her everywhere-I think I'll have to read this book!
