| I joined this site over a year ago, while my husband and I were searching for (affordable) farmhouses high and low. We came very, very close to buying a one hundred and fifty year old farmhouse with seven bedrooms and ONE bathroom that needed tons of work. It had two big barns and a silo, but only 3.5 acres. Not a problem until we found out that we could not have livestock in that township on less than five acres. Surrounded by farmland, only three houses in as many miles, but couldn't have a few chickens... So we withdrew our offer at the very last minute and were very sad. Many months passed and we found another home on three acres that was in forclosure. It too needed (needs) work, but we checked very carefully, and since the entire village is zoned agricultural (there are horses and cows "downtown"), we found we can have any livestock we disire. Only three acres, but we are surrounded by farms, so it seems like much more. We moved in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and my dad passed away Christmas day, but we are finally getting settled. Our chicken coop is up and hubby is working on fencing a little yard for our dozen hens and rooster that are living with a dear friend until we have a home for them. I have ducklings brooding in the garage and turkey poults brooding in my foyer. I just love it here. |

Your new home sounds wonderful, and being surrounded by farms is always a very comforting feeling. I looki forward to seeing pictures someday...

Kelli, congratulations on finding a farm. We only have a little over 3 acres. Right now I have the 2 calves in the backyard eating the new grass. I have towels hanging on the line and the steer is running back and forth through them like they're a cape or something! I will probably have to wash them again. But we use every available inch here. I let the goats out in the yard, too. My neighbor lets me use his pasture next door for the calves.

Kelli--how wonderful, Congratulations!! Size doesn't matter, it's getting something reasonably sized that you can handle that's important. Way to go!! I would love to see pictures as you make it your own. I'm so glad there are people who will revive an old farmstead. It breaks my heart whenever I see one going to waste, being "let go". I'm so excited for you and DH, what a wonderful adventure!

Yea, Kelly! It sounds like a great place! And you're gonna love those chickens! But, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. My heart goes out to you.

What fun you'll have making the place a home. We moved into a country home in August of last year. I am so excited to have a garden for vegetables this year. Already have radishes and lettuce in the ground.~ ~Ahrisha~ ~

| The chicken coop is done and the chickens are coming home tomorrow morning. The ducklings have moved out to the coop and are doing great. The turkeys are still indoors for a little while since I understand they are not as hearty. Now we are mapping out our garden, deciding where and what we will plant. I also have a spot picked out for a few fruit trees. Our intent is to become as self sufficient as we are able. We are thinking about putting in a couple of solar panels next spring if we can save up the money between now and then. We brought the wood stove from our other house, but we have to build a chimney before we can put it in here. That is one of our summer goals. Bunnies soon to come too, as we are going to raise them for meat. This adventure is proving to be a fun one so far. |

| Kelli, I am so happy for you. I also plan to be a farmgirl starting at 50 years old. My husband and I own five acres in New Braunfels, TX up on a hill and was planning to build our "last home" until the market crashed and we lost most of what we had. We are blessed enough to not owe anything on the land or the house we live in now. The house we have now is in a small college town with no back yard and if we plant in the front we are feeding the deer. I helped my sister build a chicken coop for her chickens and she keeps telling me I am living through her chickens. I try to tell her she is wrong. Again, I am so very pleased for you say prayers for me to get there. Suzie |

We are having our "farm" on 1/2 acre. We're in our mid-50s and still work full-time, so right now it's just us and a big veggie garden and our 3 doggies. We get lots of critters in our yard and cannot have livestock, but that's okay. I am jealous as I would like a bigger place, but am so glad you got yours. Like the others, I want pictures.

| Kelli, you will be surprised at how much you can "grow" on your 3 acres. We have downsized from 160 acres to 80 acres and now down to 2. Our sons are buying our acreage so it is not like we don't still have use of it. But still our gardens and chickens keep us busy. |

Congratulations Kelli. I am just starting on a similar adventure and can hardly wait. We have thought about rabbits as well. What breed are yours? Are you processing yourself? I just got all my seeds in the mail the last two days and plan on roughing out in colored pencil my garden plan - just for fun.

In my life I will never have a farm---but it sure is nice dreaming about it.
