Hey, all...I went to the feed store yesterday, and bought feed for my chickens, and emptied them into my garbage cans(I store the feed in them)...and was looking at them, why couldn't I reuse them, to make into reusable shopping bags...they have a cute chicken on the outside and are made out of, not paper, but, that other stuff....I think I will try it!

I make shopping bags out of the big sturdy catfood bags, I keep thinking that the stuff is tyvek, I know that is not right, but it sure is tough. I wish I had a bag with a chicken on it, that would be so cool. But it does make me feel better to transform something that might otherwise be discarded. Please post a picture when you're done.

Way to go Terri! I took a couple of horse feed sacks and sewed them into an all-weather dog bed and covered it with a big pillowcase I can wash. Thought I could probably make them available to friends, stuffed with shavings from a local woodcraft shop. I just hate thowing away so much useful, sturdy raw material. I've been stacking up the sacks, but need a ton of ideas to use them all up. I haven't made shopping bags yet, but I sure do plan to get right on it!
What about cushions for outdoor furniture? Covers for the garden on frosty nights? A whole greenhouse cover? (Some I have are mostly white, some dark purple) "Walls and a roof" for a framed out treehouse? Oh, with all this spring mud, I ought to put some in the car for floor mats. Much easier to wipe clean than those carpeted mats. Okay, kinda farmy, but I could take them out pretty easy for date night.

Michelle, great ideas. Aren't you the crafty one! I have tons of these feed sacks we've been tossing away...kicking myself but I've got more to empty and will start thinking "renew" on the feed sacks. I just didn't think about sewing that odd material...you're right it's kinda like Tyvek.

All my feed comes in paper bags. Several layers of heavy paper. One day at Walmart, on my list was big black trash bags for the shop. One of the things that I put in the big black trash bags was chicken feed bags. Duh! The chicken feed bag don't fit the garbage barrel very good but sure beats the $8-9 for a box of store bought.
I also use the chicken feed bags for weed barrier in some areas of the garden. |

I went to the post office today and my chicken bags had arrived! What a treat, they are really great looking. Honestly, sometimes I think I'm a bit simple, I get such pleasure out of little things. And it does make me feel good to use the bags for something rather than send them off to the landfill.

I made a fewof these out of chicken feed plastic bags and gave them as Christmas gifts. Great for groceries and such. I made my sis one out of a cat food bag (you really have to wash those to get rid of the oils) and they keep trying to ring it up at the grocery store!

I used mine this year to plant my potatoes in. I had seen the "potato bags" for sale for a ridiculous price. I'm please with how they are working. They are basically weed-free, direct water right to the plant when I water (instead of running into the rows to water the weeds), and harvesting is a cinch...just cut down the side of the bag and the potatoes are all right there! They have disintigrated some being out all summer, so I will throw them at the end of the season. I know it's not a long-term solution like the shopping bags are, but I saved money and re-used them once. I will do it again next year, but this winter I think I might try the shopping bag thing. :)
