Does anyone have a Vintage Singer 301 sewing machine?
Hub's bought this one for me at an antique shop.
As best as we can figure from the serial number it is was made in 1956 or 57.
It has a flip up front and a carry handle. I am guessing that maybe it is a new (mid-cntury) version of the earilier Feather Weights.
Unlike the older machines that were made of cast iron, this one is made from what looks to be cast aluminum...so it isn't heavy as it's older counter parts.
It sews like a dream and I have the origional handbook.
In the carry case it had a little box of attachments & tools, and even a can of oil that appears to be very old.
Anyways, I am just curious if anyone else has one.
Hope someone can share some info with me on this wonderful little machine.

| Grace, love your new (old) machine. My machine is a 1948 Featherweight. I've never seen one like yours. If it sews as good as mine, you'll love it. My mom bought my sewing machine new the year I joined 4-H. I never got to sew on a treddle machine. I felt like I missed something. Wish I had some info for you. Have fun with it. |

Grace, if you go to Singer's website, www.singer.com, you can get their contact info and call customer service. My sister did this to get some info and she said they have all the machines right there and can look at your machine and tell you what you want to know. She said the lady she spoke with was so sweet and very helpful. Good luck! Judy

Hi Grace,
I have a Singer 301. Yes, it's made of aluminum. While I do most of my sewing on my older caste iron machines the 301 is very nice if I want to take a machine somewhere as it is much lighter. It's a slant shank machine so keep an eye out for attachments that will fit it. I have found a buttonholer, blind stitch, and zigzagger that work great on it. Keep it cleaned and oiled and it will probably last your lifetime.

How's things in your neck of the woods????? Any "bites" yet?
Want to go to the German~American club for dinner on the 21st? they are having Rouladen....I think Meri & Evan are going too....
StitchinWitch...thanx for the info on the 301....Yep, it is a slant shank machine....it has quit a few attachments. I am so excited get sewing tomorrow with it.
My hubs found a way to look up the age of the machine, but it is a bit confusing...thus we are going by the handbook.
NA160960 is the serial number....
There is a 301A too but mine does not have the "A".
We saw that the machine comes in black, white & beige....how cool!.

Grace - It was made sometime between 1951 and 1959 (probably closer to 1951), the same as mine. 301 and 301A are identical; the A just indicates a different factory location. There were two sizes of flip-up beds and the machines came in black and a tan/brown combination. Mine is a tan/brown longbed, what is yours? You are so lucky that it came with attachments, mine came with several feet but I had to find the zigzagger, buttonholer, and blindstitcher.

Thanx so much for the help,,,,I went to the site that judybluesyes suggested and came up pretty much w/the same info...
I think mine has the longer flip-up bed.
I played with it today,,I am amazed at how great it works concidering it's age....I took the bottom cover off & did some lite cleaning and oiling and I also gave the upper portion some fresh oil. I think my machine & I will be seeing a lot of each other....hahaha!
