Got a call from my folks this a.m. in the E/R at Duke
Dad admitted himself after a rough night of food poisioning and blood coming from somewhere it shouodn't have
He has diverticulitus, and we each had our father/daughter colonocsopies at the same time last year. (We were both negative)
He has also been on low dose asprin.
When the folks called, drs were going to do a few blood draws to make sure the blood wasn't an actual leak or hemmhorage
Dad said he felt fine but was starving after his body pretty much purged everything all last night.
If all looks ok by tomorroe a.m. he'll be discharged and will be scheduled fro another colonoscopy later on in the week I think.
So just a simple prayer please.
Thanks so much |

Anna, your father is in my prayers. It's scary to get those kind of calls I know. I hope he's feeling better soon.
Hugs!

Anna-Your father will be in my prayers. I suffer from diverticulitis and have been hospitalized numerous times for it, so I know how painful it can be!

Thanks ladies.
I got antsy and called Dad directly this a.m..
Nurses were waiting for hime to pass a BM so they could check for more blood. He had another small episode last night. Breakfast sat well at the time.
Mom, who is also a nurse seems to think some of this may have been brought on by Dad having eaten a lot of Mexican food last week. He loves spicy, as so I , and he tends to really go heavy on the jalepinos.
Mom will call w/ another update this evening. As of 4 p.m. still hadn't heard anything.
So if diverticulitis is all he has......now what???
A visit to the gastro dr. is scheduled for next week. They are reluctant to do another colonoscopy less than a year after his other.
I'm of the opinion to please check him out thoroughly and rule out all possibilities!
Until this is completely resolved, please continue to remember Bobdad.
Thank you!!

Anna-The course of treatment I usually have when my diverticulitis flares up is antibiotics,a liquid only diet for a few days, and bedrest if the pain is severe.
The gastro dr. might reccomend surgery to remove the affected portion of the colon if they feel there is danger of rupture. I'm sure they'll also tell him once he's better that he needs to add fiber to his diet, but avoid foods such as nuts, seeds, popcorn, or any foods containing seeds.
I'm glad that your dad is home and I'll be praying for his complete recovery.

Thank you Diana.
And YES!! Mom already said the fiber uptake is a must. She and Dad are already into the twigs and berries....but Dad also is a fool for all things spicy and salty. He loves popcorn, chips/salsa, and especially Mexican!
I need to introduce Dad to ground flax meal. But pity he doesn't care for much yogurt or ice cream to sprinkle it on every day.
True, we can all take the Metamucil, but the more natural fiber-y foods are so much better for us. And better tasting too.
I hope anotehr trip to the E/R won't be for a GOOD LONG time.
One of Dad's buddies said "next time you order the club sandwich, make sure to remove the toothppicks!" ha ha |
