Cifra - Walmart's operations in Mexico started as Walmex, a joint venture between Cifra of Mexico and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Wal-Mart later bought a majority interest in Cifra and changed the name to Walmart de Mexico. Walmex is independently traded on the Mexican stock exchange, although Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. holds a majority interest.

I guess it will be just a matter of time before Wal-mart becomes a Nation or at least buys one! lol!
Did you know that several years back,Some of the Euro Wal-marts (2 in Germany) had started up "Friday Singles Nights"? yep, singles could post a picture/bio of themselves in the store and on Fridays evenings Singles would come & mingle! Now isn't that a hoot! I don't know if they still do this but I am not surprized!

The local Co-op is closing where we are and I heard rumours of another department store that might be closing as well. There is a Walmart store here and I think those other stores just can't compete. Very worrisome.

1.3 billion stores in the US for 300 million people?
I'm pretty certain Walmart has 3500 - 4000 stores under all their various brands (SuperCenters, Sam's etc.) in the US.
A big number for sure. |

Corrine...not if we all decide to stop shopping there.
From where I live, there are 6 Walmarts within a 25 mile drive in any direction.
This really worries me. I mean aren't there laws about any one company having a Monopoly?

Well, I thought that list was never going to end. I just kept scrolling...and scrolling...and scrolling. And I wasn't sure what that first number really was! I still find it hard to imagine.

I understand the desire to support local business. Technically for me, because I live in Arkansas, walmart is a local company. They started as a single store and grew to the massive corporation they are today. I do not agree with many of walkarts policies and would shop somewhere else if there were an alternative. However consider the number of people these walmart stores employ. A large majority of people in my area are employed by the local distribution center. As much as I dislike walmarts policies I would hate to see these people lose their jobs.

I am definitely not a Walmart apologist but in my area this is the only reasonably priced place to buy regular groceries and pet food.
Its where working class people can feed their family and pets and buy what they need to survive. The other grocery stores and specialty stores in the area are high priced and this is not an area with high paying jobs.For many people its not that they would'nt like to shop all locally but for many people it is a matter of necessity.It allows one of my friends who is retired to support his eight cats!!! Just another non global perspective on Walmart. |

In K-Falls I question how K mart, Safeway, Albertsons, Fred Meyer, Sherms Food market , Local Natural food store can survive with Walmart here? I rarely shop there... Sherms Market has better prices, friendly clerks& customer service, better selection, fresher vegetables, organic food section ...Sure, You do have to bag your own groceries but I don't mind.

I depise walmart. However, in Ashland Ohio, it is the ONLY store we have in which to buy clothing. We have no Kmart, malls, or otherwise within a 30 mile radius of here. If I'm in need of undies, then you get it at Walmart. Jeans, boots, coats you name it. It drives me insane. Sure, I go to the feed mill for animal feed, or what have you, but anything else? Its wally world.... I wish it would just stop.

It doesn't make sense does it. I don't like Walmart any more than most others...and here comes the famous...but....on some items you just can't beat the price(s). I was shopping at my local grocery store in town until I got very sick from some deli salad. I called to let them know right away....actually my hubby had to call, I was, ummmmm, indisposed. Anyway, it meant nothing to them! The store manager actually said "so, what do you want us to do?" My husband made a suggestion....
We actually got this Walmart in our home town just last year. I don't think it's doing as well as everyone thought it would but for groceries...you can't beat the selection. (based on the other two stores in town) My preference is to shop in the next town at a great store with wonderful organic selections and super veggies/bakery, even though the price is higher but I won't pick up "stuff" there like paper products, soda, personal products, and some "convenience" foods because can sometimes be 1 1/2x to 2x more! I usually get there when I go to pick up my meds. It's funny though, because I'll drive once a week even farther to go to the farmer's market when it's open.
Having a Walmart only about 15 miles away was a life saver when our power went out last month and our basement was flooding! My DH was able to get into town and back with a small generator before my bailing was overcome by the sheer volume of water coming in! And I can't deny that it's SO convenient when I can just "swing by" after work or on a lunch break. |

I guess I am just blessed to live where I do. There are Walmarts all over but also Target and K-Mart and lots of grocery stores, too. My mom and step dad give them enough of their money every week, so they don't need mine.

I loath Walmart and their *employee treatment* practices...of course, Lowes and Home Depot also treat employees as slaves as well...been there, know people firsthand so I'm not just saying this as "I heard" of it...
However, for most rural areas....they are the only place within reasonable travel distance to buy anything.
What saddens me the most is for so many ladies is how they are closing down their fabric, notions, yarn, crafts departments...this is the lifeline for so many ladies that have no place else to buy...many sew items that they resale so they are knocking down a rural persons income by doing this... The owners children have lost site of the idea behind the Walmart concept. I just don't believe Sam would approve of alot of what's happening right now.

The approx number of Walmarts, supercenter and regular stores in the USA is 2500, have no idea what that first number signifies. I track my stores ranking for sales of Hasbro (my employer's) toys, so do know the approx number of stores.
I don't believe crafts will be discontinued, though as stores are remodeled or newly opened, less and less have fabrics. Crafts don't need an associate in the dept., but depts with fabric need for cutting and pricing, that's a good part of the reason. Dollars and cents, but no "sense".

What I want to know is, if so many people are voicing their opinions about Walmart and their policies etc. WHY AREN'T THEY LISTENING? I put that documentary about Walmart on my Netflix queve yesterday....

I don't shop at Disney and their isn't a magic kingdom in every neighborhood. Disney has been around alot longer and provides us with entertainment...so who knows?
