Anyone ever made the little newspaper pots to start their plants in? Lehmans sells the wooden maker in their cataloge. I am just wondering if they actually hold up. I ususally start my seeds in March, so we could be talking up to 2 1/2 months before they go into the ground. Would you have to repot them into something else? What are your thoughts on this? Thanks Michele |

I have made them and I think they work well. When you are ready to plant, just tear down the sides and plant the whole thing in the ground.

Great question Michele, I was wondering about this myself. Heather, do you water the plants from the bottom or top when they are in the newspaper pots? I don't want a pot that is going to disintegrate before it can be transplanted outside.

I just use a spray bottle for the seedlings. I keep them in an old tray or you could even use something like a old cookie sheet or anything like that. Since I use them to start seeds, they don't need to be doused. : )

You can just wrap the newspaper around a pop can, slide it partway out to fold the bottom over, and save yourself the $15. I think I am going to be making some, myself, since I'm starting to run out of things to start seeds in. :D
I have not used them in the past, so I don't speak from experience!
Spray bottle sounds like a good idea.

Oh I saw one of those pot things too. I was thinking of using newspaper myself for a start. This will be my first time starting my own plants and only my second year with a garden.
I have this HUGE garden tub in my bathroom. Not a jetted tub BTW....just a big ole bathtub that is built into the corner. It takes the whole water heater to fill up 1/2 of the tub. Then you have to wait for the water to heat up again to fill the rest, which by then has cooled. Now for some reason....the builder found it necessary to surround the darn thing with giant mirrors. I'm telling you, it is not exactly pleasant to sit on the potty and be able to watch yourself go in the giant mirrors across the way....OR to see yourself floating around like a beluga in the tub. (I'm VERY pale) There is a recessed light fixture over the tub. Right now the tub has misc "stuff" stored in it, including my giant exercise ball. I think I'm going to use the tub as my starter spot. Bathroom is warm. I can replace the light fixture with one that hangs lower and uses "real" light and then set up some tiered shelving. Water is right there! A regular jungle room! And all those plants may just camouflage some of those mirrors!!! |

Oh my word, that is funny how you described your bathroom tub and mirrors! It sounds like a man designed that room! I think your turning it into a little jungle room is like great idea! Have fun & post pictures!
Thanks for the spray bottle idea when using paper pots. I'm seriously thinking of trying to make my own pots too. Lets keep each other posted on how we do!

Ya, I was going to have my husband make me a little pot maker. He has a lathe! I was just scared that as the plants grew, the newspaper would end up falling apart, and you would have a big mess.
