I have crocheted before but all of a sudden I think I've had memory loss or just complete brain freeze. I am doing these 7" x 9" rectangles for Warm Up America for Theresa (another post on here). Anyway, I chained enough to get the 7 inches long and then started doing a double crochet until it got to be the 9 inches the other way. My question is this:
When you turn to do the next row do you chain 1 or 2 and also do I then double crochet in the first stitch or the second? And is there a RULE for this? Does it depend on the stitch? Such as chain 1 for a SC and 2 for a DBL and go into first stitch if you are doing SC and second stitch of a new row if you are doing DBL crochets? It seems to look okay and not out of whack like I am decreasing or increasing but before I do too many more I thought I would check with some experts out there. I am SO anal...I always follow instructions and I don't have any for this and then started doubting myself and the longer I look at it I wonder if it's right. They're all going to be hooked together to make blankets and throws so I don't want to make it wrong. Thanks for any help!

Sandra, you chain two at the end of the row for Double crochet and chain one at the end for single crochet. With single crochet you go right into the next stitch as your first and for double you skip the first stitch and into the second one as your chain two counts as your first stitch in the row.:) Hope that helps. :)

Ahhhhh...Jessie! Thank you SO MUCH....I had a sneaking suspicion that I was doing it wrong and that there was, or should be a logical pattern to it and I'll be dipped if there wasn't and you answered my question right out of the box! That makes sense to me now. Again, thank you so much! So, on a triple crochet it would be 3 chains and third chain from hook? Or would the 3 chains be your first stitch and you would still go into the second stitch? I know I'm such a pest!

Another thing I learned is to look closely and see that the stitches are right on top of the last row...you can count them and look until you get used to how it is supposed to look. The first 2 chains count as the first double crochet stitch and when holding it up straight above the first one of the last row..you will see how they are evenly above each other.
Hope this helps...
Also I have made many of the Warm Up America rectangles and I had to use a small hook "F" and still crochet tight to make them the right size when using the patterns they gave us. Another friend of mine had to do the same thing...so be sure to measure and adjust accordingly.

OH...I found there are instructions for the Warm Up America on their website...it's all becoming crystal clear now! And they say to make a cardboard template 7" x 9" so it makes it easier to measure as opposed to a measuring tape or ruler....Great idea! I think I'm up and running now....thank you everyone!

It does feel good to know you are making something to be included in an afghan with others and will help a needy person.
When I did it I felt so good about it. I prefer to send them in to the original organization. My church ladies from 5 small churches, put all of ours together to make a couple of afghans and displayed them for our congregation to see. It was a nice project to do.

I just bumped it so it is under ACTIVE TOPICS right now but you can do a search also but I'll kepp trying to "bump" it to keep it active until I see you post there....how's that?
