When the green house/garden center is nearly full, can SPRING be far behind. I am blessed to work at our local nursery/garden center and wish you could all see and smell the things we have been growing over the last few weeks. Hang in there spring is coming!!!!! Janneane |

Kind of hard to believe spring is on its way here. It was a very cold, blustery and snowy day for us in the Chicago area. I'm just hoping we get to 40 like they say for next Thursday!

Well...my sign has always been skunks...dead or alive...they hibernate and when you smell or see them...they are awake and up! And they are definitely UP here in AR! Whew! So, it can't be far behind for you guys either although I must admit it has been unseasonably cold this week and actually this whole winter has been one of the coldest on record. But hope SPrings eternal and you just reminded me how far behind I am already for gardening this year! I haven't even ordered seeds much less started them...the ice storm took us all by surprise down here so I'm sure I'm not the only one behind. Have a great evening!

A full green house really gets you in the mood for spring. Ahhhhhh Enjoy it for us. It was 2 when I got up this am, and that wind is darn cold. We also still have plenty of snow on the ground.

Well the skunks are out in NC. I take care of my 2 yr old grandson while my daughter teaches school. The other day we were riding down the road and a skunk was ran over in the road. My little grandson, Conner, said "whew, that stink is all over the place Nana". I just want to squeeze him!

We had a stench of skunks here about 2 weeks ago. Very strong in the air. They're not too common here. Wonder if one moved in nearby.
We have about 6" of snow on the ground, it's covered up any signs of spring that we had been seeing. ![](icons/icon_smile_sad.gif)

We'll be planting potatoes in just a little over 3 weeks and will be putting onions in the week after that. NOT ready. Have the potato ground worked and ready but the onion patch is still full of last fall's trash. The weather has been OK to get out and work but Ole Ron and I are in here trying to get over our cough/cold/broncitis crap. The weather is cooperating if we can just get out there. Need to run the tiller where we plant onions and beans. We'll be going into the greenhouse in the next week or so to get our seed potatoes. Can't wait.
No skunks here YET! |

We have skunks here all year. Dead mostly. Our feed store and hardware still don't have anything except onions and potatoes. My ground is still soaking wet. I am so ready to plant something now! I am going to plant a few things in the raised beds this week. Weather is supposed to be nice here!

Belle, If you get in the mood for a road-trip. Redbud Farm and Nursery would only be a couple of hour drive for you. It is a three barn green house as well as a couple of cold frames. Not sure yet when we will be open to the public, it will depend on what kind of a spring we have, but maybe as soon as mid-March.... Interested? Janneane |

Oh...Janneane,,,,how cool! That is what I have always wanted to do! Do you have a list of what seeds you start when? I need to make a chart...I am SO behind this year and for several years I was ill and couldn't and now I feel like I am starting all over plus gardening in AR is a LOT different than gardening in IA where I used to live. IS that you business? I wish I lived closer....I'd be over there in a heartbeat!!!!

Janneane, just might do that! We always make a day trip and go to Arnolds up by LeRoy. The Wichita Garden show is usually on our list but may not go this year. After you have been there for 10 years, it pretty much seems the same. So a trip to Ft Scott may work. Let us know when you are 'open'.
Sandra, Have you been up to Baker Creek? It is pretty close to you. |

NO...but I just got their catalog and actually they're about 3 hours away I think. I've learned since I moved here that things look fairly close on the map but with all the curves and hills it takes LOTS longer! LOL! I was just looking at their festival in May and they have something going one Sunday of every month too so I may just have to get up REALLY early some Sunday and take a road trip. I LOVE the catalog and their whole concept....what a great family and Emilee Getzle has posted on here several times. Thanks Belle!

Sandra, We plan to attend the May Festival at Baker Creek. Wouldn't it be a hoot if we could meet up over there. We are about 4 hours away. Way more miles than you but a long stright road and some interstate. |

Sandra, no it is not my business I am just blessed to work there. It is 3 miles from my house. As we watched it being constructed I would tell my hubby, some day I am going to work there. It turned out to be my friends dad that was building it and she told him I wanted a job. This is just our second year to be open but wow it's growing(no pun intended) fast. My boss coordinates the planting times and we grow a good share of our own plants. Do you start your own seedlings and set them out? If so, your seed packets will give you and idea how soon to plant them. I hear what you are saying when you say your experience is in another region and you have to learn all over again, it takes an adjustment in your thinking. I grew up in Minnesota. Gardening in Kansas is a whole different ball game. Plants actually have a life expectancy longer that two weeks here,ha. Happy garden planning! Janneane |

Boy no wonder people dream of California.Since late Jan. we've had Sarcocca smells,Magnolia's blooming. Now all daff;s are up Daphne is just about thru.Plums are beginning, even my peach at home is in pretty pink blooms. I've been eatting Broccoli, swiss chard, lettuce, spinach,Kale some artichokes for two to three months now.I think my family might actually be getting sick of broccoli yet my second and third plantins are just coming on.My peas are about four inches tall.Onions and garlic should be bigger, was harvesting medium onions this time last year, but got them in late. Sorry to make you drool...visit? Katie |
