I think I have successfully brainwashed my kiddos regarding movies! Second to Scooby Doo (all right, I can't take credit for that!) their favorites are Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies! They are 4, 6, and 8. These are the ones they want to watch whenever they get a chance (if there's no Scooby Doo option). I recently heard my 1st grader son talking to a friend in his class about a scene from Shall We Dance and he was shocked that this boy didn't know what he was talking about!
This is a good phase as long as it lasts! I'm glad they enjoy them. |

Sheila - that's awesome!!
I remember when my son was little his babysitter had taped a bunch of "Brooklyn Bridge" and he loved it, it is cool when they haven't yet been swayed by "popular culture"

That's wonderful, Sheila...and it reminds me sooo much of me as a child! I watched those movies with my mother and father constantly--Fred was mom's favorite, and I loved Gene Kelly. In fact, watching Syd Charise and Gene Kelly in Brigadoon made me start taking ballet classes and I ended up dancing professionally for several years before injury took its toll.

There's no rule that says kids can only enjoy pop culture that's come out within their own lifetime. There's a lot of great stuff out there from the past.
I grew up with old movies too. Big treat to stay up past bedtime and watch grownup movies with mom instead of Disney stuff. I'm so glad your kids are into them. Try the Rogers and Hammerstein musicals too, or the Pirates of Penzance!

We watch old movies at our house all the time. Most recently, my daughter curled up with me and watched the Great Escape.

| The Great Escape is an old movie?? Didn't it come out just a few years ago? An old movie is Gone with the Wind and Wizzard of Oz. (1939) We watched a couple of movies this afternoon that were made in the 1950's. They looked OK to me. I could even tell you the name of the cars. The police were driving brand new 1951 Fords. |
