Ok, so I am working really hard to get my GPA up. I turn in what I need for assigments and then a little something, in order to get the maximum points. The professors alwasy comment that I do way more than what I necessary, even though they do know that I understand the concepts and ideas. I guess most of the students turn in abbreviated assignments and get their points. So when is being a diligent student, who wants to put the time in and goes over and beyond the expected (sorry, military drilled that one into me) gets LESS Points than the person who just barely turned in an assigment? Unless my assignment work is way out in left field, I just don't understand. I tested my theory and I did an assignment, brief but done how I THOUGHT they wanted it and again, I was told it was too brief. I CAN'T WIN!!!

SO, I decided just to over achieve and do my best...whatever happened to grading on input and effort?

Oh Heather! That is tough! I have two professors this semester that are the same way. In the Syllabus they both put "Answers must be short and to the point" but then when they post the "Correct" answers it is always a paragraph! A very long paragraph that goes way beyond what the book introduced. As in to answer the questions the way the correct answer says I would be needing to find outside resources. I think that is a bit ridiculous for an accounting class!!

PS- I would email them and ask them where you missed points and ask for a clarification on what is expected.

Alee- that is the thing, I have asked!!! After my first assigments were turned in and grades, I regrouped and did as they suggested and again, I was wrong!! Honestly, and this is not to sound like I am a know it all, the 2 professors in question have been at their jobs for 20+ years. God Bless them but they are not to open to a change in thinking. A lot of my classes this semester are to prepare us to be HIM managers- critical thinking, debating, writing papers, writing proposals, etc, etc, etc...to me, there is not one right answer for classes like this. Yes, grasp the basic concept of the week but give me a break!! I am very passionate about my chosen field and they really try to suck the wind out of my sails somedays!!

I do feel your frustration as well. One of the ways I have handled it in the past is to consider it training for a "future employee, employer, or situation". Hang in there!!

How many points off are you talking about? It's possible that if other students are getting slightly higher grades with shorter papers, they may just be hitting the answers more clearly and coherently. If you're still getting good grades, I'd try not to worry about it too much. Although I know how frustrating it is to be misunderstood.

I never had much trouble with grades in college, but then I took a few graduate classes and the professors started taking points off for really weird things. Like one guy took points off because I regurgitated exactly what he wanted to hear and then added one sentence of my own thoughts from my undergraduate field.
