hello.
i am new to this farmgirl forum - well to this whole thing. But I think it will be wonderful.

I have been going in the directon of organic for about 10 yrs now. It started when my son was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I started with the lasagna gardening, then went to a much bigger garden when we moved to our farm. So now I use cover crops, composting, mulching, organic fertlizers.

But I am new to heirlooms. Wondering where the best places to buy seed are. and do you save the seeds at the end of the season for the next yr? and how do you go about exchanging seeds? Are all seeds labled heirloom really heirloom.

I reall y want to this and need know every thing a newby would need to know

Rita - I think Rene and Kelley covered some important points but....no not all seed labeled heirloom is necessarily what we would like to think of as heirloom - it is not necessarily regulated as a definition so you have to research the company itself. A lot of current companies are connected with/owned by Monsanto which is actually anti-heirloom in the long run philosophy-wise. If you want to check out some books - there are a couple I would really recommend - one is by Lynn Coulter, the other by William Woys Weaver (I think) - check your library or inter-library loan. Those will give you a good start. If you join Seed Savers Exchange you get what is called a yearbook that lists registered members and what seeds they have available - you can list yours too. Of course at the mavens we are working on being able to exchange ours at the end of the season too.
Hope to see you over at the mavens - if you are curious check out the Beginners Maven Guide in the MJ's Mavens henhouse
