Hi. I just joined after stumbling across MaryJanesFarm magazine at my sister's house. Thanks, Sis!
After reading, Animal, Vegetable, Mineral by Barbara Kingsolver, I will be growing next years' vegetable garden with heirloom seeds only. This year, however, I would like to experiment with some heirloom flower seeds if anyone has them to trade. I have some handcrafted soap bars, copies of Country Home magazines, or some Shabby Chic items for trade.

Hey Erin, what are you interested in ? I have a few heirlooms french vegetables I could send your way.
Check out the "danger of extinction " link in KEEPING IN TOUCH and join the Mavens, we are all working with preserving the heirlooms varieties.
Every month we read a book related to seed preservation, heirlooms and gardening, come and join us.

Corinne,
How wonderful! Do you think the seeds would last until next Spring? (2010)? I would be interested in anything that doesn't take up a huge amount of space and that will tolerate our extreme temps in Richland Washington. We are zoned 2b or 3 according to the Western Garden zoning map.
Please let me know what you've got and what I can send to you in return

I have one or two 2 foot silk vines with dark pink baby roses, a tea cup (porcelain) nightlight, and two pale pink silky padded hangers. |

Erin, they will last this long for sure.
While in Canada we were zone 3, so the tomatoes, cabbages, leeks, winter pumpkins and carrots can stand this kind of short season growing. Just email me with your address and what you are specifically interested in, it is such a pleasure to share.
Tell me more about your soap bars please, do you make them yourself ?

Erin, by putting 'heirloom seeds' in the topic heading, you will be offered more than you will probably be able to plant! The mavens (mentioned by Corinne in her first post) strongly believe in planting heirloom varieties to keep our seed supply healthy. We're getting ready to plant our gardens and will be swapping seeds of any extras we have. If you'd like to join the discussion, just put out a post there saying "Hi, I'm Erin and I'd like to learn more about heirloom seeds" or something like that. Thank you so much for your generosity! Any seeds to feel like sending my way would be appreciated. The cold weather survivors sound like a good choice - just let me know how to keep them preserved until next year and when to plant (and if I should start them indoors when the time comes.
I have a variety of artisan soaps that I ordered on Ebay from a soapmaker (I don't know which one, because I do this often). They are about 4 ounces each. I have 5 bars in all that I can give away. They range from earthy to minty. They are yummy and I rotate change scents to use in the shower all the time.

Erin - we are a Chapter within MaryJanesFarm - we have a henhouse set up and then we mostly chat on the Danger of Extinction thread. In order to join a chapter and post in the henhouse you join the MJF sisterhood - $20 per year, although we do recognize that $20 is daunting at some points so we have an Honorary Maven thread too - you can check out what we do at the henhouse in the Beginners Mavens Guide - much easier than reading all 200 and some pages of posts:)
We are always looking for new energy to join us because we want this movement to spread - many of us took inspiration from Animal, Vegetable, Miracle too!!
I haven't gone through all my flower seeds yet but will probably have some extras, I will let you know.
We are almost neighbors too - well, that is kind of a stretch but having grown up in the western USA you don't think so much about distance - my DH works in tri-cities alot so it seems closer:)

Erin, thanks for the email hope you will able to join the prosserfarmchicks on the 19th, and check out the chapter in Richland as well. this is a great group of gals ( both the local chapter and the farmgirls as a whole)...you will love it here.
