Well, I thought my doe was pregnant & boy was I right! She had 2 beautiful little boys this morning. She's been licking them and letting them nurse, so hopefully she's going to be a good first time mommy. I waited a little while before I cleaned them off with a towel and then dipped their navels. So let's hope I don't have to wind up bottle feeding them. I'm so excited, we've never had a doe kid before! And I'm pretty sure I have 2 more does that are getting ready to kid. Babies everywhere, YEAH!!

Ah, that is so exiting! I love baby goats. What kind are they, Tammy? All mine are the end of April-early May. I can hardly wait. They are all so big already. I need goat milk bad!
If you can post oictures, I'd love to see them. How is the weather up there today?

OH happy! Happy Day!!
Congrats on the new little ones Tammy! don't worry about bottle feeding-- if the doe is happy with them, letting them nurse.. etc... she has accepted them. I've only had a ONE doe ever reject her kids after that initial "Bonding" period. The kids were two weeks old and eating solid food, so I only had to give a supplemental bottle feeding a few times a day-- I knew they weren't going to STARVE to death!! So no worries!
Besides, if, for some reason you HAD to bottle feed the kids, you'd only complain about it at the 12:00 and 4:00 am feedings! The rest of the day is a piece of cake! HA! HA! HA!

Oh, and Tammy, be CAREFUL what you wish for! Just 4 of my 13 does delivered THIRTEEN babies between them! All a surprise! unfortunately, we lost 5, but there are still EIGHT of them bouncing around! I now have 27 goats! And, from the looks of the OTHER does, there's more to come! YIKES!!!
So, you might want to get that buck a "roomy" (roommate) and a pen of his own! Otherwise-- those little buggers multiply FAST!!!

Sounds like the nanny is taking good care of those little ones so you are not on those bottle feeding schedules. I told all my mom's in the barn of your new arrivals and they are hopeing to see pictures when you can... I know it is hard to get everything done so we will wait patiently - we give you till tomorrow morning at 5 am - just kidding

Tammy, that's great. We are awaiting arrivals this winter ourselves. Usually ours kid during the worst part of the winter but I'm hoping that is behind us now.
I'm with Kris, what kind of goats do you have? I love baby goats they are so cute and fun to watch. I love sitting in the grass down by where they are playing and just watching them play. I laugh and laugh.

Okay girls, sorry I haven't updated. It was a busy weekend! My two boys are doing great. They are running and jumping everywhere. The doe turned out to be the best momma so that makes me very happy. We have one more doe that was so pregnant she couldn't move and we expected her to kid this weekend. So needless to say we stayed near the barnyard all weekend long! But of course nothing! So this morning I go to check on everyone and she had kidded just before I got down there! A doe and a buck. She's doing really good with them and they seem to be doing fine. So 4 goat babies!!! Yeah! Even though that makes 3 bucks and 1 doe.(We really needed some more doe's)
We have Boer/Nubian cross goats. We started out with Boer's so my son could show them for 4-H, but we liked them so much we decided to try and get our herd up. That's when we bought some Boer/Nubian cross does and let our Boer Buck breed them. We had read and heard that Nubian's are supposed to kid really well and make really good momma's. So far they have done just that! With our new little one's that gives us a total of 10 goats. We don't want to get to big to fast, but I would like to have around 20 breeding does by this fall. And the best of these new babies will be shown by my son(12) and daughter(5) this summer. So that's how we got into the goat business!!!
I will try to get pictures up, but can't make any promises. I'm not to savvy with that kind of thing! Also I'm looking for name suggestions!! Tammy

New babies, how exciting!!! Congrats to you and the new moms!!! Don't teach them how to jump out like my lovely Gwen...I swear, every time the baby bull moos she's out and running to him! A goat and cow in love? Only on this farm right before Valentines Day! Oh my!!!

I have nubians, but I always said that if I had two girl boer goats I would name them Bourdeaux (get it Boer Doe---hahahaha) and Merlot.

Oh congrats on your kids. This is my first year for kidding too! I had three bucklings from one doe- thought she really could have thrown in at least one doe :)
I hope you can post pictures soon, the ears on those guys has got to be way too cute! |

Seems like the year for BOYS!!! OOOHHH NOOO!!!!
Last season I had mostly buck lambs. 5 out of 7 lambs were boys (we lost 4-- and only one girl survived. Apparently the mom's couldn't COUNT!) I so hope it won't be a "boy season" with my ewes again this Spring, OR the rest of my does, but, the boys get sold anyway, so maybe I'll FINALLY make a little money off the critters this year! (I keep all my girls so my critter population is getting pretty BIG!!!!)
Do you get your goats de-horned? I've been told it's a HORRIBLE thing to do to them, but horned goats are NOT FUN!! I have only two goats in my herd with horns, but it makes a big difference. They bully the other goats and tend to get their heads stuck in things more often. I tried milking the doe (she lost her babies) and she kept poking her horns in my rear! I will not have another goat with horns if I can help it.
I bought a de-horning iron this summer and I asked my vet if he'd show me how to use it. He HATES de-horning goats, so he was very quick to say "SURE I'll show ya!" (I'm a "Hands on" learner-- and I would like an "Expert" there to help me if something goes wrong!!). Besides, it can get pretty expensive-- even though the dear man only charged me $65 to de-horn FOUR kids this Summer. The other vet in town charged me almost $100 for just TWO! And that was a few years ago. I imagine it's even MORE expensive now.

We've ended up with 6 kids! Our last two does kidded Saturday and had single births. So we now have 5 bucks and 1 doe. Too bad it wasn't the other way around, but no complaints because we didn't have a single problem with kidding and all the babies are healthy and beautiful. Our does are excellent mommas so far. They keep up with their kids and if one gets out of their sight they start calling for them. So I couldn't ask for more than that! And best of all that's 6 goats the kids(son & daughter)get to show and we didn't have to spend a penny on buying them from someone else.
Unfortunately I can't post pictures because of my dial-up. It would take all day to upload them. But believe me they are as cute as it gets! Tammy
