I posted this in Garden Gate but lisamarie508 suggested that I should post it here as well...

I do Winter Sowing and I collect the seeds from the plants in my garden. I like to do seed exchanges but Staples wants a lot of money for the big boxes of coin envelopes and the price for glassine envelopes -- forget it! You can find templates online to print out but why waste paper and ink when you can reuse something? When I get all those gardening catalogs full of glossy pages I use them to make seed packets. I've made a plastic template, I used the plastic lid from a coffee can, and I outline and then cut them out. I fold and tape and then I use sticky labels that I make on my computer with a picture of the flower or veggie, the cultivar and common name, and the date the seed was harvested. I save all of the little "do not eat" packets of dessicant you get in new stuff and put them with the seed packets in old cigar boxes.
Or, if you're feeling adventurous, you could make origami envelopes using the catalog pages. Here's a link for a pattern:

Kelly, How green! That's a great idea. It's always a shame to get rid of the old catalogs when the new ones arrive.

That is a good idea. You can also make little seed packets out of scraps of fabric.

I thought I'd quick share this idea I use with my 3rd/4th graders every year. It seems this time of year I want/NEED to garden so I make garden seed tapes. Run a length of unscented toilet paper along a table (I use my kitchen counter at home). (This is a time that CHEAP toilet paper actually seems to work better.) Fold in half lengthwise. Mist with water lightly. Place seeds along one side about a third of the way in according to planting distances. Fold again lengthwise and tamp down. Let dry totally. Roll up, label, and this spring simply dig a trench the proper depth, roll the seed tape out, cover, and wait! This is a super easy way for little kids to get involved in gardening without worrying about spacing.

Have fun!

If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping!
