Hi, Kim -

There is a link to a wonderful article in another Garden Gate thread, "Heirloom Seeds / Seed Saving." (The thread and article are from about 4 years ago but the information is solid.) http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=595 Scroll down to the paragraph that starts "In 1984, 230 companies were selling nonhybrid vegetable seeds..." As I remember (someone correct me if I'm wrong), Monsanto bought out Seminis seeds. Monsanto is one of the "larger companies" referred to in the article. They are one of about six companies that own 98% of all the seed in America. They would like to see all seed be GMO (genetically modified organisms) because (1) it would be sterile so that no one could save seed from the crops they grow. We would all be dependent on the companies to buy more seed from the "larger companies" every year. That also means those companies would (and for the most part are) control our food supply.

If you want to get more info, check out MJ's Heirloom Mavens henhouse. You're already in the sisterhood so if you find it worth pursuing, come join us. Either way, come on over to the Danger of Extinction thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908 and join in the conversation there. (Just read the first page or two of the thread - don't try to 'catch up!')We love talking about this - it's what brought us all together.

Have fun! It's gonna be a wild ride!

God bless -

Seminis isn't the only company to fall under Monsanto's spell or iron fist depending on how you see it. They have bought out many, many seed companies and it's pretty scary.

It's very scary, which is why I feel that the MJ's Heirloom Mavens is so important with what we are trying to do. As well as any one that has a desire to preserve pure seeds untainted by genetic manipulations. Monsanto is just plain scary. Seed companies that I have trusted for years have been absorbed by Monsanto and it's Seminis sub company. I will do all that I can to preserve heirlooms and pass them on.
