Hey everyone. My name is Lillie and I'm new to the Farmgirl Connection, but from what I've seen and read so far I know I'm going to love it! I live in a small town in a rural setting where farms abound. My husband and I don't live on a farm just yet but we'd like to in the near future. As far as live stock go, well, we have two small dogs, use to have a fish, but he went on to a better place. I'll be planting a square box garden this year and I was wondering if there was anyone else out there that has planted one. I'm pretty new at this but my heart is really into it. I want to be as green as Kermit the frog. As a child I remember my dad always having a huge garden every year, I loved it. Well whatever advice anyone could share with me I'd really appreciate it. Thank you so much. Lillie

Welcome, Lillie! It sounds like you've found the perfect place and we're so happy you're here. Since you're interested in gardening, why don't you hop down a thread in this forum to the Danger of Extinction thread. We're all about heirloom gardening and Rene' (prosserfarmgirl) is going to do square foot gardening this year so you have a lot in common already. Also check out the garden gate forum if you haven't yet.
My dad would have made a living from his garden if he could. He had big gardens even while he worked a full time job. The day he retired he took my mom out to eat, came home, changed clothes and finally got to devote every day to what he loved doing - farming.
Oh yea, click on the Henhouses forum and look for MJ's Heirloom Mavens. You won't be able to post in the henhouse until you're in the sisterhood but you can read to heart's content. There's a wealth of information there.
Welcome home!

Hi Lillie Welcome. I'm only been around a couple weeks but love it. Box garden sounds great and also tomatoes and vine veggies can grow in hanging baskets, that sort of thing. Have fun. Ingrid |

Wow! All you ladies are so wonderful! I feel so welcomed. I have truly found kindred spirits in all of you. I love the farm way of life, simplicity is such a blessing. Snow is melting here in Oklahoma, I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt. Thank you all for being so warm and sweet, but that's how we farm girls are, aren't we? Yup, that's right. Lillie

Lillie, you sound like a farmgirl who's been here for years. You've got the spirit alright!
Leslie and Ingrid, welcome to you too! It sounds like we're going to have a wonderful time gardening together this year.

Hi! Lillie~
Welcome. I don't live on a farm yet either but that is where my heart is. I do garden and am trying to plant a larger garden this year. We did a box garden last year. I was a little over zealous and put too much in it. Live and Learn. I suggest the Square Foot Gardening book by Mel Bartholomew (I think). It's a great book for box gardens if you can get a copy. I borrowed mine from the library probably ten times.
You will enjoy it here.

Welcome Lillie! I'm in Kentucky, we live on a few acres and raise a garden and tend to an orchard. We have some dogs and some peafowl. Not exactly a farm just yet but enough to keep us busy. It's nice to meet you here and I look forward to getting to know you better.

Once again ladies, I want to thank you all for being so warm. Your welcomes have been wonderful. I feel as though I have found a family of sisters that can take me under their wings and teach me so much. What a great way to learn. Someday I hope to earn my wings, as all of you have. Thank you so much. Lillie
