My mom's birthday is next month and she told me she wants a doll. So I asked her what kind of doll she wanted. A hippie-billy doll or you could call it a country hippie. I'm lost. I can come up with lots of ideas for the country part, but clueless on the hippie part. The only thing mom said for sure was she would like her to have- crazy striped socks and wild hair.

Please, please help me come up with some ideas.

****Well she's kind of done. Seems like she needs a little something extra, but since today is mom's birthday she has to move on to mom's house. Besides I can always add more to her.

Thanks,
Melanie

Well, one way you can make hippie hair is to first get some really wild yarn, partly mohair looks fabulous, and to make a wig of sorts first measure how long you want it and then cut a big bunch of yarn a bit longer than you think you need. Sew, with a machine probably, a line of stitches right down the middle for a part, then fold it in half and make another row of stitches just below the middle line and when you flip it over, it makes this part that looks really good.

When my daughter was about ten I helped her make a doll, she used red violet mohair yarn for hair and her doll was spectacular. Another way to make wildish doll hair is to crochet a little skullcap and then you can just attach some wild hippie hair to that....

I hope this helps a tiny bit.

This sounds like it could be fun....Well I'm thinking you could do a couple different ideas! You could do one of the refurbished barbie ideas that Mary Jane had in her last book. Go to the thirft store and look for an old doll and give her a dye job, while at the thrift store look for her clothes in the racks, look for a striped shirt that you can take home and cut up and make into socks, look for some jeans and cut them into some overrals, or better yet make it an apron. Let me know if you need more help Melanie, I'm a costume designer and this is fun stuff for me...once you get a doll you might be able to get a pattern and then go from there!

Monica- what kind of wool do you have? I would love to see a pic as well! I have brown dreads myself, I would love to find yarn to make a doll that's a mini version of me!

Monica, I would love to see pics of your wool!! I also love the idea of mohair.

Laura Marie, I had thought maybe the refurbished barbie, but mom told me she'd like a bigger doll than the ones I have made so I think I'm going to go with a 24", but your ideas a great!

You could make some lone necklaces out of beads and once her hair is done pin a cute fabric flower behind her ear.

You could take baby overalls - like striped osh-kosh and make them into a jumper. I used to wear those when I was in my hippie girl days, made em myself too:) Also homemade moccasins for a doll would be pretty easy.

Perhaps give the doll a necklace that has a peace symbol. I grew up in the hippie era. Headband, peace symbol, peasant clothes, bare feet and a smile on the doll's face. That should do it.

Goodness gracious! I'm gonna have to get going on this dollie. You gals had so many wonderful ideas and I have gotten such a tickle out of the Willie Nelson dollie idea, I couldn't sleep last night. I must have put this doll together and dressed her a hundred times in my mind last night. *Willie got a makeover too! Heehehehehehe*

Melanie, She is totally cute! I am sorry I did not get back to you about the wool I had, but it was much thicker than I thought! I would say the only thing she might need is maybe a necklace of some type, maybe a bead necklace! She is really cute though!!Great job!

Did you give her the dolly yet?

I just wanted to say that in hippie era the headband was across the forehead and tied in the back. They were leather. There were fringes on vests and purses....made of soft leather. I wore long dresses called granny dresses and crochet shawls. I think your dolly needs necklaces...yes, a peace symbol necklace and also some beads. We wore sandles...leather, not really pretty...but functional. The men's and women's sandles looked alike. In the winter it was boots..just like they wear now.

I am from that era and really miss the clothes! You could make her a denim jacket...simple design and snip the edges in little strips...it will wash to looked frayed. A purse could be made the same way.

What are your mom's ideas? Keep us up dated! I LOVE dolls.

I have a peace sign necklace that came from a costume that my son wore. Let me know if you want it. It's silver and about 3/4" across.

Mom loves her. I told mom that I didn't think she was done. That there was something missing. Mom thinks she is just fine the way she is. She especially loves her hair.
i've got this topic pinned so I can come back and read all these wonderful ideas. I think I'll make a little accessory or something here and there and put on the dollie and see how long it takes mom to notice. hehehehe

thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas.

I am so glad she likes the doll. Yes add things gradually to her...see if she notices...I love dolls so much that I make myself one for my birthdays sometimes.
