I thought someone already started a thread on this, but I don't see it any more so I hope I'm not duplicating...
Did you watch the inauguration? What did you think? I've only seen the broadcast of one other inauguration and that was the first Clinton presidency, way back in 1992, so I'm kind of a newbie on inaugurations and found it very exciting.
I thought it was a lovely ceremony. Very much like a wedding, in fact, with all the prayers and vows and the whole political community turning out to see it (as well as a whole bunch of nonpoliticians - 1.4 million or more!)I never really realized how much ritual and tradition there is in our democratic way of transferring power from one president to another. But they all feel sort of homely, having mostly started because one president did it this way and so everybody else does it that way afterward...kind of like a family tradition.
Obama's speech was great, and so was Rick Warren's inaugural prayer. I liked how they both emphasized humility and all of us coming together to make it through the current hard times. And did you notice that the classical music piece was a variation on the old Shaker hymn "Tis a gift to be simple"?

I watched it and am listening to the days events as I work. I kept the kiddos home from school so that they would see it as well. I liked the call to action for ALL citizens to do and be our best. President Obama's clip while painting a soup kitchen yesterday while being asked about the pilot that landed the plane into the river... saying" if we all committed to doing our jobs with kind of perfection" what a world we would live in. Seems to be the call to live OUR best lives.

I love the tradition and ritual of the inauguration. It is quite a beautiful ceremony. I watched most of it. I did like his speech. Hoping for better days ahead. These are such tough times. I missed the inaugural prayer. I will have to google it.
Rene~I did like that quote. If it were that way there would be immense change in this country. Ruth

While I thought it was rather unfortunate to have Rick Warren lead the opening benediction/prayer, I loved President Obama's speech! It's wonderful to have an articulate, intelligent, and thoughtful leader again. Everyone, from dignitaries to the "man of the street," looked so joyful and full of hope today. I'm glad Obama addressed the fact that difficulties still lie ahead, but I feel like we're heading in the right direction to do something about those difficulties now.

I like the ceremony and tradition of the inauguration and also the feeling of community it brings. For the last few years there have been certain occasions where I get choked up, finally figured out it was when people are together in community - diverse groups of people who are recognizing the importance of something that transcends our differences. It is a very powerful thing Amy Grace

I thought it was totally Awesome. I too realized there is a lot of pomp & circumstance, rituals, and I thought President Obama really was talking to the Now people of our nation. Our children & our grandchildren are the future. I Love America and hope that All Americans be treated equal. This is History in the making.. Wouldn't Rosa Parks be proud? We can make it happen, Working all together as One nation, I liked the fact that he more than once reminded the American people that this is not Him or his Cabinet doing this alone It is going to take All People to make it happen. I support him 100% and look forward to a New America, a Stronger and a Healthier planet. Hopefully his economic plan will play out within the next few years.(stepping down off my soapbox, taking a bow)

I got up at 5 AM and watched until about 10 PM. I love the ceremony and the traditions of the Inauguration. It makes you proud to be an American, no matter who the person is being sworn in. We are so lucky to live in a country where we are free to elect our officials and to participate in the ceremony. It's also wonderful to have a young family in the White House again. I just have to add how proud I was of President and Mrs. Bush. They were very gracious and kind to the Obamas in helping them with the transition to the White House.

I watched the Inaguration ceremony on the CBC here. It was lovely to see. What I found amazing was the size of the crowds, everybody was in such a celebratory mood. President Obama seems like a good man and hopefully will prove a good leader for your nation. It must be a pretty exciting time for all of you.

It was a beautiful ceremony wasn't it? I to loved all the prayers and what a great speech. If the people will just listen and realize we all have to do our parts, what a big difference could be made. I loved the first dance of President and Mrs. Obama, Beyonce' did a wonderful job on that. It was an inspiring day to say the least. I agree that President and Mrs. Bush and all of his staff did a great job making the transfer of power so smooth and pleasent for all concerned. I think it was truly appreciated.

Yes I agree and to be honest George Bush looked very relaxed as if a weight has been lifted. I believe he probably is a nice man and good father & husband.

I agree with the comments about Mr. and Mrs. Bush. It has been a difficult 8 years. They did seem relieved and in were so gracious. I believe they are very friendly and kind. Classy people.
I enjoyed the first dance of the President and first lady. It was nice. He has many tough issues to address in these coming years. I hope he is able to move people to each to their part.

I didn't get to see it. But I saw YouTube snippets of the various parts: Yo Yo Ma and Itzak Perlman music, Aretha Franklin, the benediction (Amen!), and the being sworn in and address. It was so lively. 2 million people came they say. Wow.
I heard he went to lunch that day with Senator McCain which I thought was really neat. McCain wasn't my vote for president, but he has done some wonderful things for Arizona and I really appreciate that a lot. So I thought that was a nice bonding.

I thought the inauguration was very impressive. I agree that it was a shame Warren gave the opening prayer, but otherwise it was excellent. I was very impressed with President Obama's speech too. His message to all Americans to "dust themselves off" and get going was very true. Everyone needs to pull together and now move forward!

Hey, everybody. Before this topic fades away, I just want to say thanks for indulging my fit of patriotism! I know political topics are somewhat sensitive/off limits, but I thought an occasion like this seems more like a community event than an opportunity for debate. I'm so glad you all responded in the same spirit! |

I would love to have Laura Bush for tea, I think she is a very elegant lady, and yes, Lisa, in a class by herself. I would not want to be President for anything. Though these last eight years have been tough, which eight hasn't? Remember Billy? Each President does good and not so good. It's hard enough to make a decision to eat out or stay home, can you imagine making a decision for the nation? Whereas I didn't vote for Obama, he will be in my prayers as he leads this country. He won't be able to fix it all, but, I pray his decisions won't make things worse either.
For tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, but keep me, guide me, love me, Lord just for today. St. Augustine

I am not sure they could get much worse. I just hope that all the wrangling between the parties can be put aside and all they concentrate on is solving these most serious problems that face not only this country but the world. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see that happen. I don't hold my breath for it, but I would love to see it happen.

Julia - Amen to what you said! I would not want to be President for anything either! I am praying for President Obama - he has a lot on his shoulders right now. So many expectations have been placed on him. I hope that people realize that he's only human and can only do so much.
I think that President Bush did look relieved. On Fox News they had his welcome home rally in Midland, TX. It was fun to watch him laughing and joking. He looked more relaxed than he's looked in a long time.
