I know you can tea stain fabric, but can you coffee stain it? I'm not a big tea drinker but I always have lots of nice dark coffee on hand. Would the same idea apply or is there something bad about using coffee instead?
Do I stain the material first and then sew, or do I sew and then stain or doesn't it matter? lol

Yes, you can coffee stain fabric. The darker the coffee the darker the fabric will get. I usually stain my fabric before I sew it, but I think depending on what it is you can stain after sewing as well. I just put mine in the sink and let it soak then wring it out and rinse it with cold water. Then dry on low or just let air dry. Hope this helps. Tammy

I stain with coffee or tea. I use cheap instant coffee. If you sprinkle the granules on the fabric, it leaves tiny little spots that make it look especially old.
Only time those two things are in my house is when I have to dye fabric. lol

Somewhere in the Sitching and Crafting room there is a tutorial by Frannie Meshorer (CabinCreekKentucky) on making fabric folk dolls. She dyes them with coffee after they are sewn with coffee. The coffee can also be applied to stuffed doll bodies with a sponge brush. It might be worth finding the tutorial. Really cute ideas and pics of dolls made by her and other farmgirls.
I don't know where, but recently I did read that dying with coffee can cause a bad smell down the line, not just a coffee smell. I don't know why that would happen, and I don't know how true that is.

I use strong, instant coffee. It works on paper too! I have coffee stained paper used for scherenschnitte, and it ages really well. Just let it dry flat. I have never notices a smell over time on the fabric and paper I have stained.

I think maybe the first time I used it it didn't work because I must have used a not 100 % natural material. I pulled something out of my fabric stash and used it. It was heavier then bedsheet cotton and had less give but nice and strong. The tea worked great! Hubby even helped and was very proud of himself when it come out so nice. I am putting the dolly together today and will try to post pics this evening or later this afternoon. :)
I was going to work on it yesterday and post them, but I forgot it was my anniversary until yesterday. but shhh!!! don't tell..lol

I do both coffee and tea staining. I always wash my fabric before dying to remove the sizing and that helps the dye to work better. I dye before sewing. If I'm doing small projects I keep coffee in a spray bottle and spray the fabric then let dry. When I make my snowmen I dilute the glue with coffee, paint the snowmen, and add the glitter. Eliminates a step and works really well.
