Ugh! If anything can get me down fast, it's when we have an inversion move in the valley. I bet it's real clear for you sisters up at ID City, huh? It's worse than fog because the sun will not burn it off. It usually takes a storm to move it out. I can only see about a half-block away around me. Nothing gets through, no sun, no moon, no stars, nothing!

Oh how I hated this in the winter back in the Salt Lake Valley. I have not missed the inversion thing up here in Montana. Even when we lived in Kalispell and the skies would be either cloudy or foggy on bad days. It was noting like the 40 + days without sun and just a brown haze to look at down in Utah. Temperature inversions are just brown and yucky! I now live in Billings for the time being and the wind blows here more than anything else. Right now I can see the blue sky peaking out between the clouds. They are saying that we will be between upper 40s to lower 50s this weekend and then back to winter after that. Oh well can't have everything.

So sorry to hear that Mary. Yes, we had beautiful skies and sunshine up here today. I've gone down to the valley on days that you had an inversion and it's a really yucky looking brown cloud hanging over you all. It makes me wonder just how healthy could you all be when you have to breathe that stuff all the time? Not that I'm rubbing it in...but I'm soooo glad I live up here!

The weatherman is calling it fog, but it sure seems like an inversion to me. Either way it's oppressive. Although it sounds like it has been raining for the several hours now, so maybe it will clear some of it out for tomorrow.

Whether they call it fog or inversion...they're just nice words for SMOG! Nobody ever seems to want to call it that anymore. Must be politically incorrect nowadays. I hope the sky clears out for you today.

Madelynne - I know what you mean about the SL Valley! Where my parents live on the east bench, you look out the front window out to a big sea of pea-soup looking air. If you have to go to the store you feel like you should hold your breath. Sometimes it is so thick it stings your eyes. Here in the Tri-Cities we have a good case of "patchy freezing fog" but at least it isn't brown.

Angie, an inversion is when a warm front moves into a mountainous area and it pushes the cold air down (cold air sinks/warm air rises) into the valleys along with whatever particles are in the air. This makes it cold and nasty for the folks in the valley while the higher altitudes have sunshine and warmer temps. It's really nice for us up here and it's the kind of weather you can just go outside in a heavy sweater and no coat. But the folks in the valley suffer with cloudy overcast skies that trap the pollution down low and makes it really cold and yucky.

Don't feel bad Mary, we are stuck in an inversion too. Our television comes from portland and they were talking about the beautiful sun they had. We have had fog all day, for the last 3 days.

So, it's bad enough if you are down in the holler' so to speak but when you add some pollution it is all pressed down on top of you. Hm, sounds depressing but then summer will come with blistering hot temps and those in the valley will be nice and cool? (Maybe  ?)

Nope! Angie, the temps in the valley are typically 10 degrees hotter than us in the summer. The higher up you go, the cooler the summer. Especially at night. In the valleys, they are basically a heat generating oasis (typical of cities) with all the concrete and asphalt. So, after the sun sets, they retain the heat, keeping it hot at night, too. Up here, there isn't much to retain the heat and our nighttime temps in the summer are usually in the 50's to upper 40's. Every once in a great while it will be in the 60's but, hardly ever. Makes it really nice for sleeping! Everybody up here opens their windows at sunset to cool the house off and in the morning (when it's downright cold) we close the windows to keep the cool air in the house. It works really well and we don't really need air conditioning for the most part.
