Actually mine are doing pretty well. It is still pretty early to tell, I've only been selling on Etsy since April and just started a booth at Bonanzle. The tough thing is promoting your online store...but this is one really great venue, since there are so many great MJF girls who are willing to look at your shop...and of course we all like to "gab" :)

my current website has been seen by 1300 people since I created it. I just wodner how many sales I missed! :( I'm working on a "real" site i can actually sell online with, just hoping it's worth the money and then hoping I would do good enough to continiue it at home. |

My website is doing very well. I have had the website for several years now. It takes a lot of work, but I enjoy it.

I sell online and it is worth it in the long run. I list things for sale on blujay.com, but it takes a long time for things to sell. I had a Christmas book for sale at blujay that I listed before the Christmas of 2007 and it didn't sell until Nov/Dec of 2008. I had almost forgotten that I listed the book. Now, when I list something on the internet, I put the item in a place where I will not forget where I put it.

Just putting this out there. Talking about online sales. I tried several Forums on this website last November and December looking for someone to knit a Christmas stocking for my new grandaughter who was born in November. I offered to pay,barter,anything... No response. Nothing.

Tracy,
You poor thing! So sorry no one responded to you! I don't knit, but I do crochet. . . do you still want her to have a handmade stocking??

My Etsy store is just starting to be seen more. I made 2 sales in one month - rather than....hmmm...NONE...which is my usual! LOL
Verybigjen (makes those fabulous little felt pincushions you see on Flickr) gave me some really good advice and it's working!
I have been posting in lots of groups on Flickr. You can't promote or sell from there, but people do see your work and they can see your site in your profile.
I also ordered a photo light box - foldable - from ebay. It was only $11.50 including shipping. My photos are so "homemade" right now, it's sad. I just got it and haven't used it yet, but am looking forward to it. If you look up Verybigjen in flickr and search for "my shooting setup" you can see what I mean.
Also there's something on Etsy called a Treasury where you compile listings of other folks' products and you get to promote others' businesses which is a direct karmic correlation to becoming successful. Help others sell and you get the good karma to increase your own business too. So I did a treasury of some stuff I'd love other people to enjoy.
I want to try to promote others more. I want to be seen more also.
I did try joining Indiepublic but haven't really seen how that will help. There's not a ton of cross-pollination so I'm not quite so into that one.
Another idea is Sampler where you send 25 or more of something you make (maybe a small item) and it goes into a bag of samples people subscribe to. If you forego receiving a sampler yourself, which you get just for providing samples, then one of your items and your promo tags, etc. for sure go into one of the "media" samplers which goes to someone like Mary Engelbriet, or Craft magazine, etc.
I haven't done that yet, but might try that soon.
So I agree with Sharon - it's work, but if more folks can see you, you can do well.

Hello Theresa. Thanks for your response. I can crochet but have never made a stocking. Have you made any? The ones we have in our family were made by an aunt and were knitted. Each was different and included our name and birth year. I am now thinking of making one out of fabric, lined, with trim, embroidery. Let me know if you do make stockings. Again, thanks Tracy

I have a website that is going to be totally revamped in the next couple of months. I do a decent business online. Just yesterday I got an order from Denmark. I have shipped to Japan, Italy, Australia, Canada, but get most of my business from the US.
I woke up on January 1st and it was 2009. And it's been that way ever since!

Yep, web sales can be great ( my business - prairielandherbs.com - is run by 75% online retail orders. my mom and i run this biz fulltime, and have for over 10 years) - BUT , you cannot slap up an etsy store or a website and immediately see a profit. it takes time, effort, promotion, advertising, etc. |
