THE MAVENS’ HAVEN
January 10, 2009

Save Our Seeds – Feed Our Future

Welcome to MJ’s Heirloom Mavens!

There isn’t anything I could write this week that would top what Dawn (deeredawn) posted about spending time with her daughter. While Audrey was visiting over Christmas break, “all I talked about was a simpler way of life, when a handshake meant a sealed deal and neighbors watched out for each other. I talked about my new relationships with all of you and told her that this is what true friendship is about.... I know without a doubt that you all have my back. You encourage me to be better than what I think is my best. I also talked to her about the symbolism of an apron.... nurturing, formidable, strong, simple, dignified, proud. She even bought one for herself....wearing it proudly to the coop to gather eggs. Go look at my blog, she looks genuinely happy....” www.harvestthymefarm.blogspot.com

You speak for us all, Dawn.

**** MAVEN TO MAVEN ****

In the Life of a Maven
Congratulations by the (big red) truckload to our QMD! “Back to the Hive” on page 90 of the new MJ magazine was written by Dawn and includes her homemade beeswax lip balm recipe. AND she was promoted to director of marketing at Meyer Hatchery ( www.meyerhatchery.com ), complete with raise. Teresa Sue (Contrary Wife) summed it up well: “See what happens when we just follow our own passions and purpose!”

An early “Happy Birthday!” to Lillian (Ms. Lilly). This Friday, January 16, is the official date.

Another milestone: Sunday, January 11th, is the four-month anniversary of the mavens!

A friend of Lora’s (FARMALL Chick) was diagnosed with cancer in early December. “She went to the doctor last week for a biopsy and it has spread to her liver. She is only 50. Please pray for her. She needs all the help she can get right now. She is staying with her daughter while the doctors decide what they can do.” Let’s all keep her in our thoughts and prayers – miracles do happen.

A hearty welcome (back) to Christina (City_Chick). She’s setting up her nest in the henhouse to work on the Heirlooms Forever beginner badge. Click here to check out the requirements http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=711 From Teresa Sue, our badge badger: “Okay Mavens, I know this is a piece of cake for the members of this chapter, so sound off who's in for this one.”

Classes are in session again for Alee (Alee) beginning January 14. Last semester she did every farmgirl proud when she carried the message into her classes. You go, farmgirl! Represent!

Ruth (homemom) will be able to chat away with us again, now that her computer screen doesn’t put on a psychedelic light show when she logs on. “I am sitting here at my computer looking at a wonderful flat screen that works and it is thanks to our sweet Teresa Sue. Thank you so much!!”

New Mavens
With the two-page spread in the new MJ magazine, we’re hoping that those of you reading along will be encouraged to join in. We agree with Rene’ (prosserfarmgirl): “The more the Merrier I say....” So just introduce yourself on the DOE thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908 and get ready for a warm mavenly welcome.

So if you’ve been wondering what the buzz is about (like that tie-in to the magazine theme?), just scratch a little opening for yourself on the DOE and join us as we plot and plan our gardens for 2009. If you are staying away because you are not in the sisterhood yet, come anyway. In these economic times we realize that not everyone has the resources to join the sisterhood so we have created a companion thread, the HHM/HM Henhouse Connection http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556&whichpage=1 . This way you can read the posts in the henhouse and post on the connection. For those already in the sisterhood, just send Gabe an e-mail at gabe@maryjanesfarm.com to be added to the henhouse. For those not in the sisterhood and are just waiting for a reason to join, this is it! And remember, if you want more information about MJ’s Heirloom Mavens, check out the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=667 and then go to Magazine: Call for Entries / Keeping in Touch / Danger of Extinction Thread and introduce yourself. We’d love to get to know you!

**** WEEKLY UPDATE ****

Heirloom Maven Badge
It’s here! It’s here! Go to the henhouse http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=719 , click on the Heirloom Maven blogspot link to see the design, then come back to henhouse, leave a comment (if you haven’t already) for Teresa Sue and tell her what a fabu job she did.

Farmgirl Buzz: Sisterhood Members Swarm to Save Heirloom Seeds from Extinction
If you haven’t received/bought the new MJ magazine yet, you are in for a sweet treat! Two (2!) full pages of the magazine are devoted the mavens! Lots of great information and a wonderful reminder to us of what we’ve accomplished in just four short months! Congratulations, mavens – and keep on plowin’ through! Thank you, MaryJane!

Heirloom Mavens Official Flower
No formal vote was taken but the response was overwhelming. The outhouse hollyhock is the official flower of the heirloom mavens! Here is the description from the SSE catalog: “This classic variety has graced outbuildings on Iowa farmsteads for over a century….Years ago, refined ladies just looked for the hollyhocks and didn’t have to ask where the outhouse was.” Mavens are already posting where they’ll plant them this year. Then we need to get our outposts built so we can use them in their official capacity!

Square Foot Gardening
Do you have your copy of “Gardening with Heirloom Seeds” by Lynn Coulter? Are you ready to read and discuss our latest book? If so, sign up in the henhouse http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=710 or, if you are not in the sisterhood yet, use the HM/HHM Discussion Thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556&whichpage=1 . From Teresa Sue: “That book will lay the foundation on the how-tos. I think it will help us understand, hence we will be able to articulate to others the basics of heirloom gardening and seed saving. To convince others, we HAVE to know what we are talking about.”

Lillian’s Yellow Heirloom Tomatoes
You may have noticed in your sisterhood newsletter a blurb about getting Lillian’s Yellow Heirloom Tomatoes from Victory Seeds. Lillian herself responded to the post in the DOE with her experience: “Karen-I saw that Victory Seed Co had Lillian's Yellow and they are close to my area too, but I ordered from them a few years ago and 1 of the packets of seeds didn't greminate and 1 of the packets had broken glass in it. The other seeds packets were fine.” Just a bit of information if anyone is planning on ordering. It’s always good to know of the experiences people have when dealing with other companies.

HMBC (Heirloom Maven Book Club)
Let the comments begin! In fact, they already have. We’re reading “Gardening with Heirloom Seeds” by Lynn Coulter. Thanks to Rene’ for posting the author’s website, www.lynncoulter.com
Join us in the henhouse http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=710 or, if you are not in the sisterhood yet, use the HM/HHM Discussion Thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556&whichpage=1 .

**** FUTURE ATTRACTIONS ****

Guess Who’s Coming to PBS…(Part 2)
Did you see it? The video for Farmer’s Almanac TV on PBS? Read Rene’s blurb at http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=26916 then click on the video and settle in for a wonderful visit with MaryJane and Meg.

**** REMINDERS ****

Time to get working on those pillow squares! If you don’t know what this refers to, click here and look for Dawn’s IDEA: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=551&whichpage=1 Due date: Memorial Day weekend. Hmmmmm, isn’t something else happening then too?

Remember to check out Our Mother Hen’s nest box in the henhouse where she will be laying her eggs filled with gardening tips, tidbits and treasures. It’s labeled as the bulletin board, but Nest Box is much more mavenly, dontcha think? http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=169

Monday night chatting is has a new hangout. Tina has graciously offered the chatroom on their STL site for our weekly hen sessions. You will need to sign up on the site, www.stliving.net , and then jump in. Hang on because it can be a wild ride but it’s one you definitely don’t want to miss! The gab-fest begins at 9pm EST / 8pm CST / 7pm MST / 6pm PST.

If you get lost in the Heirloom Maven lingo, you can find the lingo list in the Beginner’s Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=582

That’s all for this week, mavens. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please send me an e-mail and I will get back with you a.s.a.m.p. In the meantime, have a great week and see you in the DOE and/or henhouse.

God bless -
