There are little tan colored bugs on my horse. I have never seen anything like it. He is a palomino Quarter horse. Are they coming out of the pasture grass? Has anyone heard of such a thing??

Where are they on him? In his mane and tail? in his skin? on his fur?

They are in his fur, my moms friend who is a vet said they might be horse lice or something, I have asked several people and no one has heard of such a thing. Weird, I brushed him this afternoon and saw more of them.

I was thinking it might be some sort of lice or mite. Try combing some into a clean mason jar and take it into a local vet for a diagnosis

I woudl definitely try to find out what they are but in the meantime I would do everything I could to get rig of them. If they are biting insects they could harbor some sort of disease; potetially mange. Talk to your vet and find a powder or shampooo you can use to kill them.

I finally found out that it is horse lice! Gross, I keep him so clean, but he did have a leg injury a couple of months ago and I had him in my MIL's barn for a week, maybe he picked them up there, ( I have recently moved him to my new pasture)anyway the Vet said to spray him with Adams flea and tick spray, and give him Ivomectrin. That is waht I did. We'll see if that works. Fortunatly humans can't get 'em! Yuck! Thanks for your interest.

I'm glad you found out what the bugs were. Now you just have to get rid of them. At least your horse will be getting lots of lovin' with all the extra brushing!

Yup, I know its gross, but now I know what it is, and you all do too, so check your horses! They can get the bugs from rubbing on trees. Extra brushing, he does love. See ya Later Kris! Look forward to meeting ya!

If you keep up with the Ivomectrin it will work quickly....just make sure they are all gone before you stop dosing him. How often are you giving it to him? When we got our molly mule she was in very poor condition and we were dosing her with the Ivomectrin every two weeks.

Good luck to you!
